*Beware! There Are Major Spoilers Throughout This Article!*

Wasn’t Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them simply – well, fantastic? Serving as a brilliant exploration of the #HarryPotter canon, as well as delighting audiences with the new magic on show, talk has naturally turned to the future of the series. Where will we go, and what will we see?

Paris seems to the next destination, and many familiar faces are due to make an appearance alongside #EddieRedmayne’s Newt Scamander. But there are still many questions to be answered about the details and fates of other characters. Thankfully producer David Heyman is on hand to shed light on some of these, as well as revealing that a particular favorite from the movie won’t be apparating onto our movie screens any time soon...

Getting to Grips With Graves

Even among the endearingly shy Newt, the lovable Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) and the pitiable Credence Barebone (#EzraMiller), Colin Farrell’s Percival Graves was a standout. Graves is certainly one of the best new characters in the Wizarding World. As the head of the American Auror division, he is an intense and powerful figure in the Wizarding community, even though his true motives are hidden to us as he hunts down Newt, Tina (#KatherineWaterston) and the dangerous Obscurus. But all becomes clear when, by the movie’s end, it is revealed that he is none other than the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) in disguise.

Whilst the casting of #JohnnyDepp has proved to be very controversial with some fans — especially after revelations about his private life hit the internet this summer — Farrell’s part in the movie has been universally applauded. So much so that fans want to know more about his character —thankfully, Heyman was able to shed some light on Fantastic Beasts' biggest enigma:

“Yes, there was a real Graves. Yes, someone used some Polyjuice potion and took their place. I don't know where they are at the story's end. But yes, there was a real Graves...”

For many avid readers, this will fit in with what we already suspected. After all, on Pottermore, #JKRowling revealed that the Graves family was an old and respected bloodline in the Wizarding United States. In fact, Percival Graves is notably descended from one of the twelve original Aurors which helped found and enforce the MACUSA!

So does this mean that, with #Grindelwald now out in the open, there is room for the real Graves to come back into the picture?

Will Percival persevere?

The internet has been rife with speculation as to the fate of Percival Graves, with a myriad moviegoers asserting that just because he turned out to be someone else, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s dead. Grindelwald’s use of his identity is evidently similar to the switcheroo that occurred between Alastor Moody (Brendan Gleeson) and Barty Crouch Jr (#DavidTennant) in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. As we all know, in that particular situation Moody’s life was spared by Crouch so that the latter could learn about his victim’s past and personal habits to perfect his disguise.

So is Graves still out there? Could we see him assist Newt and company in the fight against Grindelwald?

Unfortunately not, if David Heyman is to be believed:

“There's no plans to bring Colin back for the sequel.”

Bummer; that will surely leave a lot of fans disappointed, although we shouldn’t be too surprised really. In The Goblet of Fire, Moody was revealed to be alive immediately after the impostor was revealed. There was no mention of Graves after Grindelwald's unmasking, so the scene and the character had a greater sense of finality to them.

Plus, it might be a bit too much of a retread if Graves were to come back and find our heroes. After all, it would be another imprisoned and impersonated Auror coming back to help fight the Big-Bad-Dark-Wizard. Sound familiar? Yup, that’s Moody’s arc in the Harry Potter series, so it might be for the best that we don’t see Graves in that kind of capacity.

What's next for our wondrous wizards?

Though Heyman’s comments seem pretty final, I think it’s best that we don’t take him fully at his word. This is coming from the guy — and the same studio — that kept the lid on the Johnny Depp/Grindelwald thing for all this time, so a reappearance from #ColinFarrell is not outside the realms of possibility.

Besides, Grindelwald was reportedly less murderous than Voldemort turned out to be, so Graves may well be recovering somewhere in the far-flung stretches of the wizarding world...if he gave up his identity unwillingly, that is! Indeed, there are ideas floating around that suggest Graves may have submitted to Grindelwald for “the greater good,” which could mean he would return to his master’s side in future installments.

Whatever way Graves fits into all of this, I’m sure that JK Rowling will graciously inform us about his fate and background, as she has done on Pottermore and her Twitter account for some time. Still, let’s hope that Graves hasn’t joined Grindelwald, for Newt’s sake at least!

With the infamous dark wizard bound to escape from MACUSA in the near future, and set raise an army against Muggle and Wizard-kind, our hero and his friends will need all of the help they can get!
