The Team Thor trailer may have given us a glimpse of more than just a powerhouse lineup of allies. Over the past month, Marvel Studios has released quite a few TV spots and trailers for Thor: Ragnarok, and the latest one shows Thor recruiting Bruce Banner, Valkyrie, and Loki to his impromptu team of Avengers. They can be seen gathered and geared up, ready to fight Hela, but the scene cuts shortly thereafter. However, an even more interesting development in Thor's journey is teased in this trailer. Check it out below:

At about 0:35 seconds in, we can see Thor fighting Hela alone. The scene appears to take place sometime after Thor's first confrontation with the queen of the damned, where she shatters his hammer into pieces. This particular fight sequence takes place in Asgard, so it probably occurs after Thor ventures to Sakarr and back. That said, the bigger takeaway from this scene is that Thor has Odin's spear, Gungnir, in hand.

Does Thor's possession of the spear mean he's king?

For those who don't remember, Loki was in possession of Odin's spear at the conclusion of Thor: The Dark World, as he impersonated Odin on the throne. No context was provided for this revelation, so we don't know exactly why he has the spear or why he's on the throne. More importantly, Loki seems to have lost the spear at some point between the events of Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok.

A variety of reasons could exist behind Loki's misplacement of the spear, but it's likely that Gungnir remains with whomever is ruling Asgard. So, the spear may have been taken from him by Hela, which sparks an even bigger question. Does Thor's possession of the spear mean he's taken it from her and become the new king of Asgard?

Simply finders keepers might not be enough evidence for us to conclude that he's become the king, but another scene featuring Thor jumping out of Asgard's central building could be the defining piece of the puzzle we need to conclude that Asgard will crown a new king. Thor bursts in with an unknown energy from his body, and a powerful one at that. Could it be the Odin Force?

Marvel comics dictate that the Odin Force grant its host immense power that might even rival the completed Infinity Gauntlet. One of the powers granted to the Odin Force's host is the ability to manipulate a massive amount of magical energy, which is ideally the one we can attribute to Thor's new powered up look. Since it looks like Thor's body can't hold in all the energy it has within, it could be a sign of Thor barely learning how to control the new power gifted to him. That said, for Thor to receive the Odin Force power, its original bearer, Odin, has to die.

Are these signs of the Odin force at hand?

Assuming Odin does die during the events of Ragnarok, followed by him gifting his abilities to Thor, the transfer of power would likely overflow in Thor's body, explaining why Thor is about to burst with energy in the aforementioned scene. Judging by Odin's continued absence from all the footage seen so far, it doesn't look like he's going to make it to the end of Ragnarok, making it all the more reasonable to assume Thor will become the new ruler of Asgard before Ragnarok concludes.

If that's not enough evidence to convince you, there's also the matter of Thor being seen with Odin's spear in the previously released concept art for Avengers: Infinity War, which depicts Thor with a spear in his hand, fighting side by side with Rocket Raccoon.

The concept art is important to acknowledge because it backs up the claims of Thor keeping Odin's spear after the events of Thor: Ragnarok. Some fans will argue that the spear Thor is holding in the concept art looks different from the one in the Ragnarok trailer, but those fans need to remember that concept art changes over time. The color difference is most prevalent, but a logical explanation could be a desire to throw people off when they revealed the concept art depicting Thor with a new weapon in hand.

All things said, the evidence towards Thor becoming Asgard's new king is stacking up. The spear in his possession and the bursts of magical energy emanating from his body are the biggest indicators of Thor overflowing with so much energy that he could have only been granted that type of power by someone as powerful as Odin. However, we should remain open to the possibility of Thor regaining the power he lost after Mjolnir was destroyed. If so, the images of Thor all powered up could simply be a sign of him using his own body as a conduit for his Thunder God powers.
