This post contains potential spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok.

Marketing for Thor: Ragnarok has just picked up, with Thor's new look unveiled in Entertainment Weekly, and lots of new details have emerged. But a few details were only available to Disney shareholders, who got to see footage of the upcoming MCU film in advance.

Fortunately, a description of the footage leaked, including a major plot reveal for Thor: Ragnarok:

"A shot of Cate Blanchett as Hela from Thor: Ragnarok, holding Mjolnir from the top, with the handle horizontal and extending away from her."

Assuming the footage description is accurate, Hela has somehow taken possession of Mjonir. It's unclear how she's become "worthy" of the hammer's power; regardless, Hela now holds Thor's hammer in her hands.

The footage description also adds context to why Thor isn't brandishing his hammer in any of the promotional material released for #ThorRagnarok so far. Since Thor (Chris Hemsworth) can be seen brandishing a pair of swords instead, fans have been questioning where Thor's hammer is — and now we apparently have an answer.

How Has Hela Taken Thor's Hammer?

Hela has more than likely taken possession of the hammer through different means than being "worthy." In the comics, #Hela is characterized by her expertise in magic, so she could feasibly conjure up some spell to wield the hammer.

We also know from EW's details on Hela (Cate Blanchett) that she'll be broken out of prison and wages a war on Asgard:

"Thor’s initial encounter with Hela gets him blasted to Sakaar, a barbaric planet ruled by the charming but nefarious Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum). [...] Thor is then forced into becoming a gladiator, which leads to his haircut and the loss of his trusty hammer."

So, Hela taking Thor's hammer from him would likely be part of her invasion plan, since Thor could otherwise stop Hela with the use of Mjolnir. But without the hammer, Thor is without most of his power, leaving Hela to do what she chooses with Asgard.

It'll be interesting to see how Thor: Ragnarok plays out, what with this being the second adventure Thor has gone on without the use of his faithful hammer. However, we should remember Thor isn't who he is because he wields the hammer; he wields the hammer because of who he is. So, we shouldn't count Thor out just yet!
