Tom Hiddleston Reveals Loki and Doctor Strange Won't See Eye To Eye In ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

Everyone is using their all-seeing Eyes of Agamotto to peer at every Avengers: Infinity War development, but we shouldn’t forget that we have three awesome additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe heading our way this year. Aside from Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok is preparing to strike... and the hype for it is growing by the minute!

How can you not get excited by a cast list which includes Cate Blanchett as Hela, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, and Benedict Cumberbatch as the ever-compelling Doctor Stephen Strange?

Strange’s role in Thor: Ragnarok is drawing a lot of interest from fans following his cinematic debut last year, which was beloved by critics and went on to work wonders at the global box office. However, it doesn’t look like everyone is going to be happy with the budding Sorcerer Supreme going forward...

Loki Isn't Impressed By Doctor Strange

In addition to reuniting the core Thor cast, Ragnarok will also see Brits Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch come together on screen for the first time since they starred in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. The two stars have a bit of a bromance going on in real life, but according to Hiddleston, Loki won’t take too kindly to his ensorcelling co-star.

Indeed, Strange’s defeat of Dormammu doesn’t count for much, at least in the God of Mischief’s opinion! IGN spoke to Hiddleston on his promotional tour for Kong: Skull Island, where the British thespian spoke of his character and disclosed that:

“I think he probably dismisses Strange...Yes, his sorcery is very impressive, but Loki’s been doing that for a century so who cares?”

As much as some fans might hate to admit it, Hiddleston does have a point. Asgardians and Frost Giants have much longer life-spans than humans, so Loki has probably seen the odd spell or two way before the mortal Doctor Strange had even begun his tutelage at Kamar-Taj.

It’s a shame really that they won’t get along, because, if you stop and think about it, they do have a few things in common. Both characters have high opinions of themselves, a theatrical flair, and resort to trickery against their enemies (as Strange exemplified against Dormammu). Yet their antagonism was always on the cards.

Will We See Loki Fight Doctor Strange?

Over in the comics, Strange and Loki have crossed paths on their very many inter-dimensional dalliances. But, as it seems to be the case in Thor: Ragnarok, they’re not friends. As Sorcerer Supreme, Strange’s remit is the protection of Earth and its standing in the universe, whilst Loki... well, let’s just say that’s not his primary concern. In one of their first meetings, Strange went up against Loki, helping Thor to protect Jane Foster from the God of Mischief’s spells; so could we see a Strange vs Loki showdown?

Such a cinematic showdown has already been rumored to happen, and it’s definitely not outside the realm of possibility. After all, in Doctor Strange’s brilliant mid-credit scene, Strange took a very officious and proactive approach in his dealings with a surprised Thor.

The death of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and his narrow defeat of Dormammu are surely spurring Strange on to take his protection of Earth seriously. With his increasing knowledge of the Infinity Stones — and of Loki’s past deeds — it stands to reason that Strange will maintain his no-nonsense attitude with Loki, who may not take kindly to it.

Should they come to blows, it’s very hard to predict who will win. Strange struggled against Loki in the comics, and even allowing for some passage of time between Doctor Strange and Ragnarok, Stephen is still relatively new to the magician’s game. Even so, Tom Hiddleston did previously mention how Cumberbatch’s Strange will demonstrate some all-new “cerebral and mind-bending” powers, so the experienced Loki of the MCU may still be given a run for his money...until Hela (Cate Blanchett) arrives, that is!

Or Will There Be A Strange Team-Up?

Loki may sit atop the throne of Asgard, but Hela is preparing to attack and bring the titular Ragnarok (the death and renewal of the Norse Gods) upon him and his people. Though Hiddleston admits that the God of Mischief may have sided with her at one point in the past, Loki must now look to his adoptive brother to help combat this fearsome foe:

“...They fall back on their brotherhood fractured though it is to see what they can do to stop [Hela]...she’s a different beast and full of surprises.”

With Thor and Loki on relatively good terms, Strange and Loki may not have time for a dust-up. Certainly, the fact that Thor travels to Bleeker Street so that he can recruit the sorcerer-in-training says something about the size of the oncoming threat.

“It’s the kind of destruction that both Thor and Loki have never seen, on a scale of terror they’ve never ever seen before.”

It sounds as if Strange and Loki may throw the odd snarky comment at each other, but whilst working together against Hela, they may come to hold the same grudging respect for each other that they have occasionally demonstrated in the comics.

Thor sure is going to have a lot to contend with in Ragnarok; he’s got to lead the unlikely team of Loki, the Hulk (#MarkRuffalo) and Doctor Strange to find his father and battle the largest threat he’s ever faced. And squabbling sure isn’t going to help – Strange v Loki aside, what’s Strange going to make of the #Hulk?!

Whatever happens, all of this drama and talent is setting the scene for another lively and legendary entry into the #MCU roster. Thor: Ragnarok is out on November the 3rd, and I only wish a Bifrost Bridge existed so that I could arrive there quicker!
