Tomodachi Life

The most random game you’ll ever play

If you’ve owned a 3DS or attended the Hyper Japan con a few years ago, then it’s likely you have heard of this game before. Maybe you’ve watched some play-throughs like Vinesauce’s one. On one hand I would say it’s like Nintendo’s version of sims, but on the other hand I think Sims and Tomodachi life are two different sort of games all together.

You essentially become the owner of an island that can house up to 100 Miis, and you eventually become a cross between Santa Claus and a great dictator. Many times the Miis will ask for food, new clothes, random questions, and advise on relationships, and family making.

I’ve called my island Depeche Island, after one of my favourite bands. I never thought that I would become addicted to this game but I did. I’ve filled up all the apartments on Depeche Island and now there’s no room at the Inn.

Unlikely couples

The idea of the game is to create miis based on you, your friends and your favourite celebrities. Many put their favourite fictional characters in the hope they will get together. Does this always work? Not in the way you think. Friendship and love requests are always random. Sometimes they do it themselves. I’ve had various degrees of success and discovered couples you’d only find in crack fanfics. The sailor scouts had some interesting choice of husbands. Sailor Mercury and Professor Oak announced the birth of their baby boy called Archie a day before the royal baby’s name was announced. And since then all the newborn boys have been called Archie. I guess they’re celebrating the royal baby’s birth in their own special way.

Sailor Venus is married to Gary Oak. Batman and Sailor Mars fight justice together as a couple.

Sailor Jupiter is dating Professor Severus Snape. Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask are currently single, but they just broke up with their partners so maybe they will get together like they do in the anime.

Tyrion Lannister marrying Princess Anna from Frozen is an oddly satisfying match. They had a wonderful honeymoon in Australia.

Blossoming Families

Sadly same sex marriages are not an option in this game. But by a pure error, I made my Athena Cykes mii a male and she ended up falling in love with my mii based on Juniper Woods. They have travelled all over the world together and even went to space together. They now have three sons living in the Mii apartments, and two daughters, and another son that travel. There is no limit to how many children married couples can have.

Iris and Cilan, Miis based on their Pokemon counterfeits, are another success couple. To think that they almost broke up. I remember in Hyper Japan they gave us the opportunity to print out our favourite screenshots from Tomodachi Life. As a big Wishfulshipper I chose a picture of these two on a bench, I still have it in my possession. They have two daughters and a son. Their future daughter-in-law is older than the two of them combined.

Drama

I’ve had Mr. Bean lose his precious rock. Tuxedo Mask and Rose Nylund fight over the custody of clotted cream. Who knew Clotted cream would be the cause of divorce.

Then we’ve also had Ashton Frey from the Letter host a barbecue and surprisingly, no one died but had to give a lot of stomach medicine out that day. The following day, Tuxedo Mask was selling drumsticks at discount price whilst giving away complimentary stomach medicines.

As you play the game more, more features become unlocked. One of these include rankings. Interestingly the most eligible women on the island are not Disney princesses, movie stars or adorable anime characters...

Golden Girls reign supreme

One of the best comedies around

There ya have it. The Miis love the wisdom and expertise of the golden girls, Sophia in particular tops the ranking every time. Playing the game this morning we had three beautiful young men all fighting for Sophia’s affections (including Tuxedo Mask). Even though she’s in a happy relationship with Cilan and Iris’ son.

Age gaps are overcome with special sprays that make the Miis older or younger.

You couldn’t make the stuff up even if you tried. I could have stopped some of the actions from happening, but I think it’s the pure coincidences and the randomness is what makes playing this game fun and hilarious. Never have I ever played a mini-game where I’ve had to help someone sneeze, and they didn’t cover their mouth!

With that aside, I love this game. It’s a fun, stress-free and hilarious. I look forward to the new Tomodachi Life installments.
