2018 has been an eventful year in the sci-fi/superhero movie genre. With movies such as Ready Player One, Black Panther, Solo: A Star Wars Story, andAvengers: Infinity Warwinning awards and becoming some of the highest grossing box off movies of all time, 2019 will have a difficult year to follow up. Fans of the sci-fi and superhero genres are craving more of these stellar movies and the movie industry has made plans to deliver. Here are the top 10 sci-fi and superhero movies that have me counting down the days till I can go see them in theaters.

Fans of Marvel and the X-Men superhero movies will be getting a whole new experience than from previous films with the release of The New Mutants on February, 22 2019. The movie will not take from other action or comedy styles of film that Marvel's other movies in 2019 will include, but will be a more dark, horror style of movie. The film is being directed by Josh Boone, previously the director of The Fault in Our Stars, so his transition from the love to horror genre will be interesting to see. The New Mutants will feature young teen mutants that have yet to be made into movies including Magik, a teleporting and magic-sword wielding Russian (sister of X-men member Colossus), who will be played by Anya Taylor Joy (Split). Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will be playing Rahne Sinclair who, in true Stark fashion, can transform herself into a wolf-like creature. The rest of the cast includes Stranger Things' Charlie Heatons as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Mirage, and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes, the doctor at the facility with the ability to create shields around herself.

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen

The half-demon Hellboy is scheduled, yet again, to be taken from the comic books and placed on the big screen. The new Hellboy movie is scheduled with a release date of April 4, 2019, 15 years after the first film. Unlike the earlier film which was rated PG-13, this one will have an R-rating. The movie will star David Harbour (Jim Hopper from Stranger Things) as Hellboy, Ian McShane as the Professor Bruttenholm, a scientist and adoptive father of Hellboy, and Milla Jovovich as the movies villain, the Blood Queen, a witch who stole the great wizard Merlin's powers. Now released from her confinement, the Blood Queen seeks to wage war and war upon and conquer the entire world. The movie will be directed by Neil Marshall, known for directing many of the battle scenes in the infamous show Game of Thrones. Coming from a popular comic book series, the upcoming Hellboy movie should excite fans to see the hero on the big screen once again.

After the release of The Justice League movie in 2017 in which many mainstream superheroes were introduced to the big screen including The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg, many DC Comic fans have been waiting for the company to bring another key member out of the comics and into the cinematic world. This next hero will be Shazam, or Captain Marvel. Shazam! is scheduled with a release date of April, 5 2019. DC Comics and Warner Bros Inc., with the help of director David F. Sandberg, will look to come out of the slump they have been with their movies in 2019, having just received a measly 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes on their last movie The Justice League. Many people (including Deadpool) believe that the DC Universe and its characters have been too dark in recent films and so DC will try to change that perception with Shazam. Captain Marvel becomes the alter ego of Billy Batson (Angel Angel), a light hearted but troubled foster child. After meeting the wizard Shazam, Billy is bestowed the powers of Captain Marvel (The superheros earlier name before copyright issues), and by yelling Shazam! Billy transforms from a child into a flying, lightning blasting, super strong man (played by Zachary Levi). The villains in the film will be Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong from The Kingsman) and Black Adam (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson). Shazam! seems as though it will be DC's change from dark to humorous styles of movies and, if done correctly, could be a tremendous success.

Captain Marvel

Anyone who is keeping up with the Marvel Universe, including myself, is excited for the release of Captain Marvel on March, 8 2019 and will consider it the most looked forward to of the Marvel movies of 2019. After the end of Avengers: Infinity Wars (spoilers) in which half of the universe is annihilated by Thanos, an end credit scene shows director of Shield, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), sending a distress signal before turning to dust. This signal was sent to Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. The new Captain Marvel movie however, will not take place after the battle in Infinity Wars but rather in the 1990’s. The movie will include Captain Marvel and the Shield agency, run by a younger Nick Fury (still Samuel L. Jackson) fighting against the alien invasion of the Skrulls, a shape-shifting race of conquers. Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will be tasked with tying Captain Marvel and her story to the events in other Marvel movies such as Infinity Wars as she will almost certainly be a large factor in Avengers 4. The movie will feature Carol Danvers an Air Force pilot who, in a crash, is infused with alien DNA making her one of the strongest heroes in the universe. As the Skrulls will now have entered the Marvel cinematic universe, watchers should be wary as in an alien invasion in which no ones who is human or not, any hero or human could have been replaced with a Skrull.

Men In Black 4

The alien fighting Men In Black will be returning on June, 14 2019. Unlike the last MIB 3 film from 2012, this film will be centered around the United Kingdom's branch of alien fighting agents. Sadly, original stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are not expected to return for this reboot, however they will be replaced by Chris Hemsworth and his Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson. Liam Neeson will also be featured in a key role in the film, most likely as the head of the UK branch. Emma Thompson will be the only previous character reprising her role as she will continue to portray Agent O, the head of the American Branch. Rafe Spall, Kumail Nanjiani, Laurent Nicolas Bourgeois, and Larry Nicolas Bourgeois have also been added to the cast. The plot for the upcoming movie is still in the dark but with the original producers still on the project and F. Gary Gray directing, any fan of the franchise should be excited for this upcoming reboot.

Gambit

Ever since his first appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, fans have been eagerly waiting for the return of Gambit. Marvel and 20th Century Fox have announced that, if all goes well, he will return to the big screen on June 7, 2019 with his own solo movie: Gambit. The only casting that has been released for the movie is that Channing Tatum will star as Gambit. Gambit, aka Remy LeBeau, was an abandoned child who was taken in by the New Orleans Thieves Guild. Remy has the ability to charge objects with energy, his go-to objects being playing cards. This film will most likely be based around Remy’s life in the guild as producer Simon Kinberg has said it will be more of a heist style movie than a superhero movie. Although there has been trouble with finding a suitable director for the film, resulting in a few setbacks, fans can look forward to eventually seeing the card throwing thief on the big screen.

March 22, 2019 marks the release date of the newest Godzilla film. Director Gareth Edwards (Solo: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla) will be replaced as director by Michael Dougherty (Krampus). The films plot will likely involve Godzilla's return to face the MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) and/or a large array of other monsters. As such loads of destruction is all but guaranteed. Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) has been cast as what seems to be the lead role of the film along with Kyle Chandler who will play her father. Based off the ending of the last Godzilla movie it seems as though Godzilla will be protecting the world and will not, at least intentionally, be harming humans.

Star Wars Episode IX

The ninth movie in the everlasting Star Wars franchise is set to be released on December 20, 2019. It can be assumed that this movie will continue from the the events of Star Wars Episode 8 in which Kylo Ren has taken over the First Order after killing Snoke and is still chasing the Rey and the Resistance. Each movie seems to be a send off for the original three as Han Solo was sent off in Star Wars: Force Awakens. At the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Luke Skywalker has become one with the force and will unlikely be any more than an advice giving “force ghost” in the next film. As such it seems that Star Wars Episode IX will answer all the questions fans have about the characters including Rey's origin, and be the final send off for Leia Skywalker, the last of the original three.

M. Night Shyamalan will be releasing the third installment of his trilogy with Glass on January, 8 2019. This movie will continue from the storylines of Unbreakable, in which David Dunn (Bruce Willis) becomes a superhero who is eventually betrayed by the evil Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), an extremely fragile but super intelligent man. It will also follow with James Mcavoy's character in the movie Split, in which he plays a schizophrenic man with 23 personalities including the “Beast,” an evil being with extraordinary abilities. Glass will feature these three characters in what seems to be an insane asylum. By the look of the trailer the movie will include Mr. Glass as the mastermind, as he will team up with the "beast" to try to defeat his arch-nemesis, David Dunn.

Ad Astra

Ad Astra is an Interstellar style movie which will largely be set in space. The movie takes place 100 years from now in 2119 as humans begin to leave earth and colonize on other planets. Roy Mcbride (Brad Pitt) goes on a mission into space to land on the moon and send a message to the human camp on Neptune in hopes to reach his father, Clifford Mcbride (Tommy Lee Jones) who, along with the rest of the camp, went missing at the Neptune camp constructing a telescope to search for extraterrestrial life. Roy will have to travel to the moon, which is now half colonized and half lawless open land in which anything goes. Ad Astra seems to fit into the more recent style of space movies and could be the Martian of the movies of 2019. An antagonist facing an abundance of challenges while traveling through space is a formula that has been and always could be made into a spectacular film.
