Watching 'Kakegurui' Season 2 Episode 3

Spoilers ahead.

As a graduating film student, that has made his fair share of media, I can only hope that I manage to make something as glorious as this show. This show tries its best to be an anime as opposed to something that takes place in real life, and that makes it all the more enjoyable to watch. With only two more episodes left in the season, I am certain that this season will end once Kaede has had the Kaneki makeover. Frankly, I cannot wait for that moment.

What is curious is that while there was a completely new faction that was introduced in the previous episode, they were all but forgotten in this episode as we are focusing on the gambling taking place on the stage. Even the head of the student paper is back in the theatre where this is taking place, when only moments ago he was near the entrance witnessing the new faction entering. Thinking about it, it could be that they are being built up as a possible foil for the live action film that was released on the third of May, made by the same cast and crew. If this is indeed the case, then I hope that Netflix continues to do what it does best and host the film as well.

Midway through this episode, I realized that, while in the anime we are following the right character in Yumeko, the live action show is definitely not following the right character. The character that this show should be following is Suzui. Anytime he is on screen, he is beyond entertaining to watch. Though at the same time I am glad that he is not the focus of the show, primarily because his type of character in excess has the potential of getting far too annoying in the long run to be enjoyable to watch.

All things considered, Mary is the only character that is somewhat normal, and seems like someone that would exist in the world that we live in. This is because when anything outlandish happens, her reaction is quite similar to how we are looking at the show. Although, this slight amount of realism is thrown out the window when she is gambling herself. What really taps me on the back of the head is actually Itsuki. Not for anything to do with her performance; rather, every time I see her, I think of Tsubasa Honda because they look so familiar and I always have to tell myself that it is not her. It is something that has been happening since the moment the character was introduced into the show, so it is nothing new.

At this point, I am certain that the creators of the show are going all out in making things as ridiculous as possible, placing the opening to the show a mere seven minutes before the episode actually ended. That being said, watching it was pure joy as the visuals really push the over-the-top nature of what it is that we are seeing. Kaede and Yumeko having a lip sync battle as the opening was fabulous beyond any words that I can hope to use in the human tongue. Beyond that, revealing his master plan in the walk up to the stage was pure gold as he spoke to himself like a megalomaniacal super-villain before revealing his ultimate goal to everyone's pure, surprising, disbelief. Added to that the reaction, when Yumeko forces him to a gambling match, is gold.

Speaking to a friend about the show, I am in the realization of just how much of a niche taste that this type of show is, as she had the appropriate reaction of thinking that this is trash, giving up on it while I revel in it and find it to be one of the main attractions of the show; the self awareness to know exactly what it is and run with it.
