While the Kevin James comedy Kevin Can Wait may have slipped under your radar in its freshman year, prepare to take note — maybe just not for the right reasons. It looks like neither Kevin nor CBS could "wait," and the show is undergoing a cast reshuffle ahead of Season 2. While James will return to play the titular Kevin, the show will spectacularly kill off Erinn Hayes's Donna Gable in a time (and shark) jump — cue exhaustive groans.

Kevin waits for no man.

Picking up a year after the Season 1 finale, Kevin Can Wait will now depict the Gable patriarch as a widower with kids. Speaking to reporters, CBS programming chief Thom Sherman told Entertainment Weekly:

“The character will have passed away, and we will be moving forward in time.

CBS president Kelly Kahl added:

"It will be treated with dignity and respect, something that will have taken place in the past.”

The sitcom about a retired police officer with kids failed to set ratings alight, and it sounds like Season 2 will be taking us in a different direction. However, the irony doesn't end here. Upgraded from a small part in the show's premiere season, #LeahRemini will now be a series regular moving forward. For those who don't know, James and Remini share a long history with each other, depicting a married couple on another CBS comedy, King of Queens. Remini plays tough detective Vanessa Cellucci on Kevin Can Wait, and it doesn't take a genius to guess who Kevin's next love interest will presumably be.

The new series will see Kevin join a security firm run by Vanessa, and Kahl says that the two stars are made to act alongside each other:

“I think when everybody collectively saw how Leah and Kevin were together in those last couple of episodes, there was an undeniable spark there. I think Leah and the studio and network got together and we wanted to keep that magic together.”

It may be a case of "It ain't broke don't fix it," but is morphing your failing comedy into King of Queens really the right way to go? It is safe to say that the internet didn't take long to rip CBS apart on this one:
