Weathering The Stormy Seas Of Love: Halle Berry Confirms Secret X-Men Movie Romance

Can you feel the "spark?" Well, two of the biggest names in comic book movie history have just announced a tangled web of love, loss, and Logan. For 17 years and 10 X-Men movies, we have seen the good and the great of Xavier's mutants come together and fall apart, however, did you know that two of them were getting it on in secret this entire time? Ripped straight from the pages of Marvel comics, it sounds like Wolverine has been running his claws through Storm's mohawk behind our backs — escandalo!

Lucky Logan

In an interview with EW, actress #HalleBerry dropped an #XMen spoiler that has spent some 17 years hidden in plain sight:

“Storm and Logan used to be lovers. It’s true. Storm and Logan had a thing.”

Well strike me down with lightning and claw out my eyes, who saw that one coming? Berry famously played Ororo Munroe in four installments of the X-Men movies, while #HughJackman portrayed James Howlett/Logan/Wolverine in nine entries.

With Jackman's tenure as Wolverine spanning the entire X-Men franchise — thus far — it was easy to assume that his big love had been #FamkeJanssen's Jean Grey. There may have been that X-Men Origins interlude with Lynn Collins as Silverfox and The Wolverine with Tao Okamoto as Mariko Yashida, but Jean was always the phoenix from the ashes. With Jackman's swansong in James Mangold's Logan, the only woman in his life was adoptive daughter Laura Kinney, but even then, the memory of Janssen's Jean was always haunting him.

It hadn't ever been alluded to that Ororo and Logan were more than just friends, but Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past did contain a cut scene where the two kissed just before Wolverine's jaunt to the past. Sadly, along with an entire Rogue subplot, this ended up on the cutting room floor and we thought nothing more of it.

A Storm In A Teacup

Even though it plays out in the comic books, a Storm and Wolverine romance never seemed to be in the cards when Fox took the series to our screens. Even last year's X-Men: Apocalypse tipped Jean as the woman of Wolverine's dreams, while Sophie Turner's younger version of Grey shared a tender moment with our clawed Canadian. It seems that Berry has shattered the illusion, but she maintains that it is actually Jean who is the homewrecker:

“I joke in the movies, I’m like, ‘How come nobody’s loving on Storm.’ Like what’s wrong with Storm? Nobody is checking for Storm. So, we decided that Storm and Logan had a thing, and then Jean came and messed that up.”

It also seems strange that Berry and presumably several directors concocted an entire storyline that we never got a whiff of in any movie. However, the former Storm actress said it all happened:

“When he really decided that Jean Grey was his [love] … that caused a problem,” she said. Storm was heartbroken in the aftermath. The having two girls at once thing, that didn’t work for … that doesn’t work for Storm.”

This may not redeem four, yes four, lackluster performances from Berry as Storm, but it does at least give her paper-thin character slightly more backstory. It is hard to pinpoint what went wrong with Fox's version of Storm, and even Alexandra Shipp's recent performance in Apocalypse fared equally as averagely. It seems that she is one character the studio just can't get right.

With Berry and Jackman both seemingly gone for good from the X-verse, and promises of no new Wolverine for the foreseeable future, there may be a wait until we see this storyline play out on our screens again. So, despite what Berry reveals, don't start "Shipp-ing" any budding romances for Alexandria and a dashing young James Howlett anytime soon.
