Well it looks like James Wan is putting on his deep sea diving gear to catch us some villains for the upcoming Aquaman solo film. The director has promised to put his Conjuring 2 skills to the test to bring us some creatures of the deep.

Despite being there through thick and thin since 1941, Aquaman is frequently the butt of the joke in the DC franchise. Already saying it is expected to be a "motherf****r to shoot", Wan has a tough task on his hands to bring the character to life, especially giving the stellar performance of Batman v Superman at the box office. Game of Thrones' Jason Momoa will play the Justice League's aquatic hero in his own film, slated for a July 27, 2018 release.

Wan told Slashfilm that he is excited to bring the The King of the Seven Seas to life:

There’s always something kind of cool about Aquaman still, the idea of creating a huge world that is on our planet. That’s the thing about Aquaman that’s cool is he’s not an alien, right? He’s from our planet and he’s from a society that we’re not privy to in the context of the story. Isn’t it crazy to think that we’ve explored space more than we have explored the depths of our ocean? That just fires up my imagination about potential sea monsters and cool creatures, that kind of stuff.

If Wan is heading in the direction of creatures and the SFX cupboard, then don't expect the likes of Ocean Master or Black Manta to be bagging the lead *boo hiss*. Such a shame as they are two of the most notable Aquaman adversaries, but never say never. Who knows though, they could feature in an Aquaman sequel, or at least be teased in the first film. Just think, Batman Begins took it slow with The Joker buildup. As for possible horrors of the deep that The Aquatic Ace could face...

Five villains Aquaman could face:

The Dead King

First appearance : Aquaman #16

Once the great king of Atlantis, The Dead King was overthrown by his brother before returning years later to exact revenge and sink the city. He has superhuman strength, making him stronger than Aquaman and also possesses the ability to control ice to create huge spikes or storms.

The Thirst

First Appearance: Aquaman: Secret Files and Origins #2003

Made from dry river mud, The Thirst is the mystical ‘brother’ of a being called the Waterbearer. The Thirst attempted to drain the rivers of Earth and the magical waters of the Secret Sea. He is an immortal parasite who once merged with Aquaman during a climactic battle. Aquaman gave its control to the Light of the Universe which ultimately destroyed the Thirst.

Charybdis

First Appearance: Aquaman #1

The man responsible for Aquaman's pre-Flashpoint hand loss, Charybdis is the super-strength being who grows stronger by absorbing others' powers. His piranha teeth and claws are definitely something Wan could sink his teeth into.

Kordax

First Appearance: The Atlantis Chronicles #4

Abandoned due to his green scaled body, Kordax led an army of sharks on a failed bid to claim the throne. He returned to fight Aquaman but was defeated when he fell on his own sword. He lives on in the 'curse of Kordax' where Atlanteans are fearful of those with blonde hair.

King Shark

First Appearance: Superboy #3

Terrorising Hawaii was the main goal of the Humanoid shark before he became an anti-hero. Nanaue then went on to join the ranks of The Suicide Squad, but don't expect him to pop up in this year's film of the same name. He was a mentor to the new Aquaman, Arthur Joseph Curry, but was given a backstory by being a previous enemy of the original Aquaman.
