'What If' Review
It's adorable, it doesn't have the quickest or smartest script but the relationship between the two characters is enough for you to stay with this. Radcliffe is brilliant here, and you don't see Harry Potter in there that's Wallace.

Wallace just dumped his cheating girlfriend but he's the one feeling dumped. At a party he get's the privilege of meeting cartoonist/animator Chantry. Chantry is a young woman happy in her life with boyfriend Ben. The two decide to just be friends. As friends, they decide to bond over things like a number of feces left compact inside celebrities, as well as the interesting sound food known as "Fool's Gold". With such interesting topics to connect over it's not a wonder, they become BFF's pretty quickly. Ben lets Wallace know right off the bat that he better keep it in his pants. But with the help of his roommate and Chantry's cousin Allan (Adam Driver), and his new fiancee/wife Dalia.
What We Think
This film is the cinematic equivalent of a basket of puppies. It's adorable, it doesn't have the quickest or smartest script but the relationship between the two characters is enough for you to stay with this. Radcliffe is brilliant here, and you don't see Harry Potter in there. That's Wallace. Zoe Kazan is quirky and adorkable. She's been in a slew of small indie romances including the brilliant In Your Eyes and Ruby Sparks. She's found a niche right now, but that doesn't mean she's a one trick pony (see: The Exploding Girl). Dowse builds a beautiful watch with this right down to the great soundtrack!
Our Grade: A-
I don't why, but I loved this film! It just had a charm about it that really radiated past the screen. The two leads have a chemistry about them that infect the entirety of the film and is truly wonderful to see. I look forward to more of this kind of thing from Radcliffe in his post-Potter days. As for Dowse, he continues to get better. From Take Me Home Tonight he made the awesome comedy Goon, and now this fine display of romantic comedy takes the cake. It'll be great to see where he goes next. We'll be watching closely. For now, enjoy one of the best romcoms in quite a few years.

The Pearl by John Steinbeck
‘The Pearl’ is a well-known by under-read classic and, as a teacher, many of my students have absolutely loved it. Not just because it is short, but because it presents a storyline that is interesting and corrupting. Easy to read and easier to analyse, ‘The Pearl’ is one of Steinbeck’s hardest hitting classics with an underlying message about protecting what is actually important. By the end of the book, the reader is left defeated and believing in the wrong thing. The idealism around this book is incredible and it is so dark too. For a long while you are supporting the wrong people, thinking in the wrong way and the whole story becomes one long act of misdirection by Steinbeck to show in a ‘Monkey’s Paw’ fashion why we should never chase wealth and status.
