What Kristen Stewart Can Teach Us About Endurance In The Age Of Social Media Bullies

It seems like the young actress has the right idea when it comes to being attacked on social media.

Though she hasn't made a #Twilight movie since 2012, Kristen Stewart will always be known as Bella Swan Cullen to diehard Twilight fans. Though she is forging ahead with a career that doesn't involve vampires or werewolves, Stewart will never escape her past — especially her relationship with Twilight co-star, #RobertPattinson, and the fallout from an indiscretion that ended the romance, which she recapped in a politically charged Saturday Night Live monologue earlier this year:

Back in 2012, when the news broke that Stewart had been photographed kissing Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders, the Twitter response was bombastic and even cruel. Here are just a few tweets from back then:

"So Kristen Stewart can stick to one facial expression but not one sexual partner?""My heart goes out to #RPatz, to whoever at Summit works hard to stage his faux-mance with #KStew for the tabloids to sell movie tickets""Rob is too good for Kristen""Hiding an affair was probably the best acting KStew has ever done."

But Kristen accepted the hatred, and recently admitted that the episode wasn't traumatic to her:

"I don’t view the whole Twilight blow-up as being generally traumatic. It would take someone with a really unhealthy amount of ego to be upset that everyone doesn’t love them. It would be silly to say I don’t care what people think of my work and who I am, but stuff is polarizing, period."

It seems like the young actress has the right idea when it comes to being attacked on social media. That might have something to do with how she feels about social media as a whole. When interviewed by V magazine last week, Kristen told the publication that social media "has definitely changed us," even addicting us, and that we waste so much time "validating something very superficial in [us]."

How wonderful would it be if we could learn to take things in stride like Kristen Stewart? Perhaps there would be fewer Twitter wars and Facebook arguments. If only we could remember that social media isn't our entire life, and that it's all too easy to hurl insults when you're behind a computer screen.

In the meantime, Kristen has gone on to win the Best Supporting Actress Cesar Award in Paris, making her the first American actress to take home a win at what's considered the French equivalent of the Oscars. And she's become a critical darling for her roles in films like #PersonalShopper and #Anesthesia, proving that social media attacks have definitely not hurt her career.
