What Marvel-lous News: 'Homecoming' Director Confirms Whether 'Venom' Will Be In The MCU Or Not

As fun as it is to have #TomHolland cheerfully bounce around the New York skyline, many are hoping that #Sony's upcoming #Venom movie will remain loyal to the darker side of #SpiderMan and the tale of Eddie Brock. In between alien symbiotes grabbing hold of your body and going on a murderous rampage, even the very look of Venom lends itself to a world that the #MCU and #Disney are just unable to craft.

With other character-led films involving Black Cat and Silver Sable announced, it seemed plausible that Sony could work on its own separate villainverse away from #RobertDowneyJr, #ChrisEvans, and the myriad of #superheroes suiting up for #InfinityWar. Consider your prayers answered, because #JonWatts, the #SpiderManHomecoming director, has confirmed that Venom will NOT be part of the MCU (cheers internally).

Darkness Falls

Watts categorically confirmed the news, saying that there are no plans to connect Homecoming to any form of what Venom will be:

“It’s not. It’s not connected to the Marvel world, so that’s really intriguing… what that will be. I don’t know anything about it. It’s not connected, so there’s not that overlap. I’m only focused on my movie right now.”

Admittedly, it throws a whole lot of questions into the mix, like, "can we have Venom without Spider-Man?" or, "will there be a new 'new' Spider-Man?" Contractual issues over characters are the main reason Venom won't feature in the MCU, a little similar to Deadpool's largely X-Menless outing. While Deadpool made a joke of it, we can only hope Venom does the same. Secondly, free from the reigns of our Disney overlords, could Venom finally nab that elusive R-rating that has been circling the film.

Here comes the Carnage.

Some may be bummed out by the news, but we should remember that without the candy-coated MCU, we will probably get a refreshingly adult version. While Venom is just the tip of the iceberg, a non-MCU universe could also lead into fan-favorite #Carnage, which, let's be honest, is what most people are hoping for.

Eddie Brock may be the down-and-out reporter who was taken over by the alien menace as Venom, however, it is his psychopath cellmate Cletus Kasady who has a lot more fun with the evil. Kasady was the serial killer with a penchant for pushing grandmas down the stairs, and as red-suited Carnage he has played a more sadistic Venom since his introduction in late 1991. Try as #KevinFeige and co. might, it is a fair assumption that they wouldn't be able to do Carnage or Venom justice under the confines of what the MCU does.

Whatever happens, and even without a new Peter Parker, Sony had better get their skates on. With filming scheduled to start later this year, and with an October 2018 release, Venom hasn't got long to start spreading its toxins — consider the hype train boarded!
