What's Really Going On With The Suicide Squad?

If you haven't seen the latest Suicide Squad trailer yet, then please stop reading and watch this.

Okay, now that you've seen the most recent and most definitely glorious Suicide Squad trailer, hopefully you're as geeked about it as I am. From day one, Suicide Squad has promised to be an unorthodox film and a sure-fire, roller-coaster ride. It truly appears to be setting itself up to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, hits of the year, most likely being on par with Captain America: Civil War. Some may say that's a big assumption, but so far I've seen nothing that warrants anything but the highest hopes for Suicide Squad.

Yet with all my hopes and dreams for this film, through all the trailers we've been left with some nagging questions and some big ideas, so I wanted to take a second and look at what we know, and where Suicide Squad may be going.

The Super Anti-Heroes

The team that Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) has created is pretty well known by this point, but in case you're not sure here's the breakdown:

• Rick Flagg (Joel Kinneman), the military coordinator and leader.
• Deadshot (Will Smith), the assassin who never misses.
• El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), the flame-wielding vigilante.
• Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), the violent and grotesque monster.
• Katana (Karen Fukuhara), expert martial artist and sword-master.
• Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), the insane and beautiful clown-princess.
• Slipknot (Adam Beach), another assassin specializing in rope-work.
• Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), the quick-witted Aussie criminal.

This team has been around for years in the comics, and most likely we will meet the team in a way that mirrors the source material, although the characters themselves are going to be different from any of the comic-book iterations. The Suicide Squad will join together at Director Waller's behest to confront some villainous action that holds potentially deadly repercussions.

From what we've seen so far, the actors are staying fairly close to their subject matter. Margot Robbie looks to truly steal the show with her performance being incredibly on-point to the Harley Quinn that we all know and love. With such a starry cast, it's hard to imagine the characters not being vibrant and diverse, which is what we'd expect from David Ayer's take on the Suicide Squad.

The Antagonist(s)

Outside of The Joker being in the film, the actual villain of the movie has been a closely guarded secret. Now, I say 'the actual villain' because I don't think that The Joker is actually the main adversary that the Suicide Squad is sent to fight. Is he who the Squad is sent to capture? Possibly. But I believe that as the movie progresses we will uncover something darker that Director Waller knew about all along. So if the actual villain isn't The Joker, who is it?

As I see it, there are a couple possibilities, but my favorite idea is that the Suicide Squad is going to face off against Enchantress (Cara Delevingne). And before you tell me that she's a part of "Task Force X" aka The Suicide Squad, I'll suggest you go back and look through the trailers because she is not once shown in the same frame as any of the anti-heroes. Then in this latest trailer, there is a shot of Amanda Waller presenting her idea for her secret Task Force. In this shot it shows the mugshots for the team that I listed above (sans Katana, as I believe that she is actually a non-incarcerated character who simply joins the Squad somewhat further into the film).

So, if Enchantress is actually the primary antagonist in the film, that could explain why we have seen so little of her through the trailers and why she hasn't been in the same shots as any of the other characters. Through the few appearances she has made, we see what can be assumed as her character's 'birth' and perhaps that is where her mystic side truly takes over and goes on a rampage of sorts which turns the city into a war-zone that only the Suicide Squad can deal with.

The way I see it is that Enchantress plays a pivotal role in the chaos that the Suicide Squad finds themselves in the middle of. Now, that doesn't mean that The Joker isn't an adversary that the Squad pursues. I think he's merely a distraction from the true objective that Enchantress has created as we are set to see several actual minor villains like Tattooed Man, King Shark and Blackwater (see below) appear to bring about some sort of planetary domination or destruction.

The Rest

Seeing as Suicide Squad won't be released until August 5th, there's still a lot of time to learn the remainder of the secrets it holds, but honestly I hope we don't get any more information. I'm hoping that some of the following questions don't get answered until we are actually watching the film.

• Who is Scott Eastwood's character? - The rumors say he's secretly playing Nightwing, which would be an interesting connection to the remained of the DC Cinematic Universe and could open up the Bat-Family for future films.
• How important is Common's character, Monster T? - We're all fairly convinced that he's playing Tattooed Man, which would make a great deal of sense considering the image above. Yet, his role in the film hasn't really been expanded upon.
• Who is Ike Barinholtz portraying? - There are a few rumors about his casting: Possibly becoming the Batman villain, Dr. Hugo Strange. Another fun possibility is that he is playing Hannibal "Everyman" Bates and can mimic the powers and looks of anyone he eats a piece of.
• How do King Shark, Anvil, Blackwater fit into the story? - Yep, you heard me right; there are 3 fairly unmentioned characters that will have some sort of appearance in the film. King Shark (Raymond Olubawale), Anvil (Dan Petronijevic) and Blackwater (Drew Moss) are all on the casting notice, but we really have no idea how they play in. Here's hoping for some sort of League of Villains creation...

So, if nothing else, we're set to see something incredible when Suicide Squad hits theaters in August. Are you ready?
