Where Are They Now: The Cast of RENT

Musical theater translated to the big screen has not always been appreciated by either fans of musicals nor fans of movies, though with the (subjective) success of recent films such as Into the Woods (2014) and The Last Five Years (2014), I thought we could go back to 2005 to see where the cast of RENT are now.

Musical theater translated to the big screen has not always been appreciated by either fans of musicals nor fans of movies, though with the (subjective) success of recent films such as Into the Woods (2014) and The Last Five Years (2014), I thought we could go back to 2005 to see where the cast of RENT are now. I was in high school when RENT came out and all of my theater geek friends went to see it together and sing along, and we were not disappointed. As far as movie musicals go, RENT did a great job translating this operatic-esque show into a film that movie goers would respect as well, even having most of the original cast join for the movie. Let's take a look at what the cast has been up to in the past 10 years.

Since completing his camera clutching role, Rapp has gone on to guest star on some of TV's biggest shows, continued his musical career in If/Then (along with Idina Menzel), and has a handful of films which are in post-production. Maybe one of my favorite and unexpected pop-ups was in an episode of Psych called 'Psych The Musical'.

After his time on stage with the original cast (1996), Pascal took Broadway by storm with leading roles in Memphis, Aida, and Cabaret, along with credits in a handful of movies. He also release a few albums with his band, Larry and Me. Pascal will reprise his role from SLC Punk! (1999) in the 2015 sequel, Punk's Dead.

One of the few people from the cast that didn't come from the '96 original Broadway cast, Dawson was a welcome addition that blended perfectly into the ensemble. With a breathtaking filmography and having recently been added to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Claire Temple in Daredevil (Jessica Jones and Luke Cage), Dawson has been a very busy actress over the past 10 years.

After his time with RENT on both stage and in the movie, Martin played memorable roles in Law And Order, Smash!, and most recently, The Flash, as well as a handful of movies.

After RENT, Heredia took a break from Broadway, popping up in popular TV dramas and averaging about one movie a year since then; however, In 2011, he returned to the stage as Jacob in La Cage aux Folles!

An actress that should need no introduction, Idina Menzel has been a recurring character on Glee, star of Broadway's Wicked and If/Then, and the star of Disney's recent hits Enchanted and Frozen.

An actress and producer, known for The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Death Proof (2007), and Looper (2012), Thoms is the other cast member that didn't come from the original Broadway cast, but was a welcome addition. After the movie, she was asked to join the final Broadway cast of Rent, which she gladly accepted from July, 26 2008 until the final show on September 7, 2008. With an impressive resume of both TV and Film roles, her most recent endeavor is in Send Me: An Original Web Series which is currently in post-production.

Another pro, maybe best known for his involvement in the recent TV series The Good Wife and Murder in the First, Diggs has a grand movie resume dating back to 1998. Formerly married to Idina Menzel, they both appeared on stage together in the shows Rent, The Wild Party, and Wicked. Look for him in One Shot, currently in post-production.
