There is still an endless wasteland of time until we saddle up for the second season of #HBO's #Westworld, and although the first season is long over, fans are still speculating on what is on the horizon. #ThandieNewton's standout performance as brothel madam Maeve was one of the highlights of the series. We all (nearly) forgot her performance in Mission: Impossible II in favor of merkins and f-words.

Maeve was one of the few characters who wasn't caught in the crossfire of the finale bloodbath, but she also stopped just short of her happy ending outside of the park. With Maeve assured to return for Season 2, where does this leave her? Now, showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have stepped in to confirm one of the biggest Maeve mysteries — and it's a doozy!

Maevey It's True

The season finale ended as Maeve appeared to go rogue, ditching her "loop" and heading for the nearest exit. Fans will remember that she gunned her way through Shogun World and to an escape train. While Maeve settled in to leave her robotic slavery behind, she appeared to make a last-minute decision to leave the train and return for round 2. It led some to believe that Maeve had finally overwritten her protocols, and Nolan was recently quick to reboot the theory. Speaking at PaleyFest, the showrunner revealed it was always the show's intention for Maeve to accomplish some good before the season was out:

“The way that we designed it and the way we shot it… that is really the first decision she’s ever made. For me, it’s a very emotional moment in the episode because you’re seeing the first freewill.”

It is a little glimmer of hope for the woman who died thousands of times and had her pseudo-daughter taken away from her. Sure, Maeve may just be a bunch of circuits and wires, but if Westworld taught us anything, can't robots feel too?

The other big question that was posed to the panel was in regard to #EvanRachelWood's Dolores. When asked if Dolores had achieved consciousness when she unloaded a gun into the brains of park director Dr. Robert Ford, Nolan teased, “Isn’t it more fun to just guess?”

It was a typically cryptic response that goes hand in hand with the mysterious series. Dolores aside, the Maeve story at least confirms that it is possible for the machines of the moment to achieve free will. Season 2 is confirmed to take the story in a whole new direction, and where there's a will, there's a way. The story will unravel when Westworld Season 2 returns some time in 2018 (we hope).
