Which Marvel Projects Would the Writers of 'Captain America: Civil War' Love to Handle?

Let's take a look at their answers, and see how likely they are!

With Captain America: Civil War's US arrival imminent, it's no surprise that the cast and crew are doing the rounds! Over at THR, screenwriters Steve McFeely and Chris Markus were asked a pretty intriguing question:

Is there any one Marvel character from anywhere in the universe that you would like to see down the line in a Marvel movie?

Let's take a look at their answers, and see how likely they are!

Steve McFeely's pick - Namor!

Prince Namor welcomes you to Atlantis!

"Namor. He is kind of a jerk and has a chip on his shoulder and he is a king and lives underwater. The degree of difficulty is so high, though. Cause it could be a great movie or it could be truly terrible."

Otherwise known as the Sub-Mariner, Namor is one of Marvel's oldest characters. He's the King of Atlantis, and you're never entirely sure which side he'll be on - he's as likely to declare war on the surface world as he is to side with the Avengers in a fight! As McFeely says, he's an intriguing character in that he's not naturally one you find sympathetic. Then again, an ego-maniacal billionaire industrialist wasn't a natural star superhero until Marvel released Iron Man in 2008.

Namor's catchphrase!

Unfortunately, there are two problems with the idea of introducing Namor. The first is that nobody's quite sure where the film rights lie. Marvel sold the rights to Universal in 2001, and they've been working to get the rights back. In 2014, IGN asked Marvel visionary Kevin Feige whether Marvel had achieved this aim, and he gave a (very) qualified yes. Here's what he said:

"It’s slightly more complicated than that. Let’s put it this way – there are entanglements that make it less easy. There are older contracts that still involve other parties that mean we need to work things out before we move forward on it. As opposed to an Iron Man or any of the Avengers or any of the other Marvel characters where we could just put them in."

It's possible that the negotiations leave distribution rights to Universal (just as they had distribution rights to The Incredible Hulk). Still, it makes Namor an awkward proposition.

The second problem is that a Namor pitch would be very similar to an Aquaman pitch. Is there really enough interest in the concept of Atlantis to warrant two submarine superhero adventures? Marvel would look like Namor was just their answer to Jason Momoa's Aquaman, when in reality he predates DC's character by a couple of years.

So what's the likelihood of this happening? Low.

Chris Markus' pick - Marvel Zombies!

The Marvel Zombies attack!

"I think it would be cool to make a Marvel Zombies movie but that would require a whole other wing or, at least, another dimension."

A fan-favourite, the Marvel Zombies franchise is exactly what it says on the can. In 2005, Robert Kirkman (of The Walking Dead fame) launched a five-issue miniseries in which an alternate Marvel Universe had been infected by a zombie-virus. He charted the fall of that world, with the zombie-virus leading to superheroes and super-villains uniting in their hunger for flesh and brains!

The concept's been returned to many times, and has always been characterised by dark humour. Given the popularity of the zombie concept right now, it's no surprise that Chris Markus is interested in playing with the concept. It even has a link to The Walking Dead through Robert Kirkman!

Magneto cornered by the Marvel Zombies!

Again, though, this is a concept that's unlikely to get off the ground. First off, it would require Marvel making a film based entirely in a separate universe, but sharing the cast of the MCU. Given many stars are only signed up for so many movies, I doubt that Marvel would be interested in doing an alt-reality story as opposed to continuing the story of the MCU.

Meanwhile, Disney seem committed to keeping the MCU films strictly PG-13. Even Deadpool's remarkable success hasn't changed that:

For a Marvel Zombies project to really work, it would most likely need to have a lot more gore than your typical PG-13.

So what's the likelihood of this happening? Even lower.

Sadly, it looks as though Steve McFeely and Chris Markus won't get to make their dream films. I'm sure the initial reactions to Captain America: Civil War will mean it doesn't sting too much, though!
