Who Are The Suicide Squad?

Sunday night's MTV award's were extremely Superhero heavy, showing just how ingrained into our culture these films have become, and fans couldn't be happier.

If you've seen anything on my page, you'll know that I am a Marvel fan boy; however, after seeing Batman v Superman, I am now very interested in what DC is doing. I've always been a Batman fan, but I'm learning more and more about the other characters. Seeing The Suicide Squad trailer last night brought more than a smile to my face. Maybe you're like me and don't know too much about these characters, but want to. Well then, this article is for you! I've done the research so you don't have to.

"Task Force X, perhaps better known by its nickname: the Suicide Squad... [is a] team of super-villains, assembled by their director Amanda “The Wall” Waller... [The team] undertakes high-risk covert operations and in exchange receive commuted prison sentences. And we do mean high-risk. Regardless of abilities and talent, every member of the Squad is expendable—it’s expected that many will not return. As expendable assets, all members are fitted with an explosive device in their neck to assure obedience. If Squad members try to escape while on a mission...well, escape isn't an option. Run away and it’s BOOM!"

Now let's take a look at all the individual members, starting with the brain behind the team.

Amanda “The Wall” Waller

Waller is a cold leader who follows no moral guidebook, never hesitating to put the team into near-death situations, she operates by her own rules. The missions she assigns to the team supposedly serve a higher purpose, but it's hard to be sure when the directives are coming from her. In leading the Squad, Waller tries to show that she has not become one of them, though she may prove to be too late.

Rick Flagg

The military officer who leads the Task Force X team, yet hates working with the criminals under his "care." In the comics, Flagg showed many signs of his own instability and resented any indication that he and Deadshot were alike.

Deadshot

Assassin and expert marksman Floyd Lawton lives to do the job that he's been hired for with the least amount of casualties/bullets used, perhaps due to his own arrogance or an insatiable desire to be the best, he has the incredible ability to "never miss" a target. Along with this amazing skill, Deadshot shows very little fear as he has a death wish to die in the most spectacular fashion possible.

Harley Quinn

Dr. Harleen Quinzel was formerly a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, Gotham's home for the criminally insane, but after meeting the Joker, Quinn became obsessed with the Jester of Genocide's warped mind. Seeing this rare opportunity, the Joker drove his therapist so mad that he was able to control her in any way he pleased. After falling in love with the Harlequin of Hate, Quinn proceeded to brake him out of Arkham, devoting her life to him and his mayhem. Harley Quinn is athletic, agile and unpredictable in a fight, making her a formidable opponent on her own, but with her willingness to do anything to further the Clown Prince of Crime's goals she stands out as one of the most formidable villains on the team.

Katana

Wielding the mystical Soultaker blade, which is capable of trapping the souls of its victims, Katana serves as Rick Flagg's bodyguard. An expert martial artist and swords woman, Katana volunteered meaning she is not a criminal and does not have a micro-bomb implant. Fukuhara has stated that Katana "has morals and codes. She can also slice through hundreds of people without taking a breath."

Captain Boomerang

A violent thug from Australia who uses a variety of high-tech boomerangs to commit crimes, George "Digger" Harkness is one of the less-than-effective members of the team with a jarring personality, undisguised racism, and easily the most undependable member of the team—and that's by the Squad's standards.

Enchantress

Enchantress is an ancient powerful sorceress inadvertently unleashed after a long time of imprisonment. While Enchantress is not technically a member of the Squad, her powers drew Amanda Waller's attention. Fans have speculated that she is being used by Waller, or even the Joker, in some capacity.

El Diablo

Formerly a Los Angeles gang member who can summon flames, Chato Santana is very different from his teammates as he wants no part of the fight.

Killer Croc

Suffering from a condition that causes him to develop reptile-like skin, this supervillain was been described as "a cannibal with rage issues" by Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

Slipknot

Christopher Weiss is a trained assassin and a master in the use of ropes, including the unbreakable ones which he developed, earning himself the nickname "Slipknot."

Extras

While technically not a part of The Suicide Squad, it is worth noting that there are two other characters noticeably present in the film...

The Joker

Renowned as Batman's greatest enemy... an extreme psychopath, with genius-level intelligence and a warped, sadistic sense of humor... The Joker is obsessed with Batman, the pair representing a yin-yang of opposing dark and light force; although it is the Joker who represents humor and color and Batman who dwells in the dark. Murder, theft, and terrorism, no crime is beyond the Joker, and his exploits are a theatrical performance that are funny to him alone... Spectacle is more important than success for the Joker, and if it is not spectacular it is boring... The Joker is the "personification of the irrational", and represents "everything Batman [opposes]".

Batman

"There will reportedly be a scene in Suicide Squad that features Waller returning to her office in a maximum security prison, and discovering that Batman is sitting and waiting for her (yes, he broke into the prison to accomplish this intimidation move). He explains his concerns about the Suicide Squad being operational, but takes it a step further by explaining that if anything goes wrong he will hold her personally responsible... Of course, it doesn't look like this will be the full extent of Batman's role in Suicide Squad. After all, the scene described doesn't exactly provide a reason for why the Dark Knight would be in his Batmobile and chasing the Joker's sports car. Sources are apparently also saying that the film will have at least one scene featuring Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne, but there currently is no context for that part."
