Whose Side Is Chris Evans Personally on for 'Captain America: Civil War'?

During Salt Lake City Comic Con my brother and I were able to get tickets to the largest event of the show, Chris Evans's Q&A Panel. While we had a long wait, it was worth it when we were able to get to the front of the line and ask him the first two questions. While he explained the difference between filming Johnny and Captain America, my brother queued up to ask one of the most important questions a fan could:

Whose side would Chris Evans be on if he weren't Captain America?

Before answering, Chris did look a little uncomfortable as he was trying not give away any big spoilers, and at first said that he would be on Thor's side. He did take a moment to consider his answer before going into it.

He confirmed that the reason they are fighting is because Tony wants to sign a peace accord to govern the superheroes. After the battle in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the world has become uneasy with the superheroes fighting and putting so many in danger without thinking ahead about what the result of their actions could be. After having not listened to anyone and gone ahead, making Ultron without thinking what it might lead to, and seeing the future of what could happen in his nightmares from Scarlet Witch, Tony understandably seems to want to be reeled in a little closer to the vest.

He does actually agree and understand where Tony is coming from, to a certain extent.

"Tony actually thinks we should be signing these accords and reporting to somebody, and Cap, who's always been a company man and has always been a soldier, actually doesn't trust anymore. Given what happened in Cap 2, I think he kind of feels the safest hands are his own. And these are understandable concerns, but this is tough, because even reading the script, you think I think I agree with Tony in a way, and I do agree that to make this work, you do need to surrender to the group. It can't just be one person saying this is right and this is what we're going to do."

After everything Steve had gone through in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, however, it makes sense that he would be more reluctant to have to blindly take orders from someone. He has lost a lot of the trust and respect he had after being betrayed so entirely in that movie.

"But Cap has his reasons, he certainly has his reasons, and he is a good man and his moral compass is probably the cleanest. This is a tough thing. This is what made it so interesting while we were filming, and it's hopefully what will make the movie great is nobody's right, nobody's wrong. There's no clear bad guy here. We both have a point of view, which is akin to most disagreements in life and politics."

It looks as though there will be a lot of tough choices to make when the movie finally comes out, and we will all be a little torn over which side to take and who is in the right.
