Why Chloe Bennet's Instagram Video Has Led Fans to Think The Kree Will Return in 'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Season 5

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return to our screens January 2018, and filming for the upcoming fifth season is underway. As is always the case, the cast are dropping entertaining teasers that show just how much of a blast they're having. Take, for example, Chloe Bennet's (Daisy Johnson) now-deleted Instagram video, which showed some of the show's female stars enjoying a workout. It was just a bit of fun, but the fact it has since been deleted seems suspicious — particularly when you look at this image with an attentive fan managed to snap before the video was taken down:

Looking past Bennet and Natalia Cordova Buckley (Yo-Yo), fans spotted an intriguing blue-skinned figure in the background. It's unlikely to be Yondu of Guardians of the Galaxy fame, and there's only one blue-skinned race that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has ever been interested in.

I'm talking, of course, about the Kree. It looks as though this fun video might have dropped a major spoiler for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5!

Season 5's Likely Arc

Season 4 came to a close with S.H.I.E.L.D. arrested by a high-tech military team, and carted off to an unknown location in space. We ended with Coulson taking a look out a window at a beautiful spacescape, before reluctantly telling himself it was time to get back to work. Fans swiftly deduced that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 is set to embrace the cosmic side of the MCU, and will likely see the team pressed into service for S.W.O.R.D., a top-secret organization created to protect the world from alien threats.

ABC's decision to delay Season 5 until January next year means we'd expect to be seeing the show's 100th episode around the time #InfinityWar is showing in cinemas. This has led fans to expect this arc to tie into the movies, just as Season 1's overarching narrative orbited Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It's a smart move, and a sure-fire way to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the MCU in style!

This photo definitely suggests we're interpreting the signs correctly, especially when you consider that the Kree are set to become even more important to the future (and past) of the MCU. We recently learned that 2019's Captain Marvel will be based in the '90s, and will see Carol Danvers plunged into the Kree-Skrull War. There are even unverified rumors that the Kree superhero Mar-Vell will actually crop up in the film!

Is this a sign that Marvel Studios and Marvel Television are beginning to work together again? An organizational restructure back in 2015 saw Marvel Studios separated from the wider Marvel group, and fans have since become irritated with the loose relationship between the companies. Each has essentially settled into doing their own thing, with only minimal reference to the other. But this is the second hint that the relationship between Marvel Studios and the wider Marvel group is improving; we recently learned that next year's comic-book movie tie-ins will be a lot more inspiring than the simply film adaptations we've seen this year.

The Inhumans

Of course, for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Kree are a very ominous presence indeed. The Kree experimented upon humans back in prehistoric times, creating the #Inhumans: a race of people who possess super-powers, triggered when the Inhuman gene within them reacts to the presence of Terrigen. As we've seen in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Kree view the Inhumans as a dangerous experiment that should be destroyed. Given Chloe Bennet's Daisy Johnson is herself an Inhuman, any encounter between Quake and the Kree is sure to be an entertaining one.

The Inhumans arc is about to move in another direction, as any Marvel fan will know. Partnering with IMAX, Marvel and ABC are releasing an Inhumans TV series that reveals an ancient Inhuman colony based on the Dark Side of the Moon, and stars the classic Marvel Inhuman Royal Family. We recently learned how Inhumans showrunner Scott Buck has carefully tied the two shows together, essentially using the concepts and ideas of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a launchpad for his series. What's still unclear, though, is how Inhumans will change the status quo for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. One thing's for sure; the Kree wouldn't take well to learning about the existence of Attilan...

No wonder this video has been taken down; that one cameo appearance from a blue man has sparked all kinds of speculation, suggesting Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 is heading to space just in time for a tie-in with Infinity War. With the 100th episode due to air when Infinity War is out at the box office, and the Kree becoming ever more important to the future of the MCU, this arc sounds particularly promising.
