Avengers: Infinity War was heaven for all comic book fans out there, featuring the most awaited clash between our favorite superheroes and the Mad Titan. Thanos has been dying to make an entrance since making the first peek-a-boo in the post credit scene of Avengers (2012). He was definitely influential and has been long tagged as the "villain with a heart." With the Infinity Stones, the team-ups, Black Order and so much more, this 2 hours and 36 minutes long film was the best Marvel movie to date. And if that wasn’t enough, the post-credit scene took everyone’s last breath away.
Just before fading away into the Soul World (probably), Nick Fury sent a distress call through his beeper device which revealed Captain Marvel’s red and blue logo at the end. We know that a Captain Marvel movie featuring Brie Larson is already set to release on March 8, 2019. This is just weeks before Avengers 4 will be out in the theaters (on May 3, 2019). So, Captain Marvel is definitely going to turn up in the sequel to fight against the Mad Titan. But why didn’t she turn up earlier?
Is she even on Earth?
As far as we know from the comics, Carol Danvers was an Air Force pilot who was asked to capture the Kree Warrior, Mar-Vell, or Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers isn’t the original Captain Marvel). She, however, developed a bond with him. An accident later caused the merging of her DNA with that of Mar-Vell’s, giving her superpowers. She then later took on the mantle of Captain Marvel and trained under the guidance of Mar-Vell before joining the Avengers.
So, if she had powers and was living someplace on Earth why didn’t she turn up to help the Avengers? The battle or the invasion was widely channeled throughout media. Scarlet Witch herself got to know about the invasion by watching the news on a television. Carol in the comics, was occasionally a freelance writer so she has to have known about the invasion somehow.
Should it be taken to mean that she wasn’t on Earth for the time being? Maybe, she was off fighting some other villain on another planet. That still doesn’t explain how a little beeper device could be used to contact her outside of Earth. It also doesn’t explain why she wasn’t contacted for help in New York or Sokovia. For the time being, however, it’s easier to speculate that she wasn’t on Earth.
Why wasn’t S.H.I.E.L.D. involved at all in 'Infinity War'?
The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division is supposed to look after all activities which might be a threat to humankind. And Thanos was pretty much a threat to the whole universe. So, why didn’t S.H.I.E.L.D. join forces with the superheroes if they were aware of the impending threat? They were quite efficient in the battle at New York and Sokovia, but didn’t make an entrance in Wakanda.
Now, the obvious explanation would be that they don’t actually "fight" but mostly engage in reconnaissance, gathering intel and standard human evacuation procedures like they did in the earlier movies. However, in Captain America: Winter Soldier, we saw that they were capable of building extremely destructive weapons like those helicarriers.
In fact, we found that Nick Fury and Agent Hill came to know about the attack only moments before fading away. Should this be taken to mean that the S.H.I.E.L.D. couldn’t be fully functional after the events of Captain America: Winter Soldier? Also, taking the Sokovia Accords into account, it can be assumed that S.H.I.E.L.D was disintegrated and Nick Fury and Maria Hill were working alone.
If Nick Fury was aware of Captain Marvel’s Capabilities, why didn’t he inform the Avengers about her?
The origin story of Captain Marvel is set in the 90s which means she gained her powers long before the first Iron Man movie set things into motion. It’s true that Carol Danvers wasn’t herself aware of her capabilities for the first few years, but it still doesn’t explain her absence from the Avengers team. It remains highly mysterious as to why Nick Fury was so keen in keeping Captain Marvel under wraps when the whole universe was at threat.
Nick Fury might have not considered her for the Avengers Initiative as she was probably off fighting other villains in the universe. But he could have asked for her help in the event of an alien invasion like that in New York. The fact that he carries a device with him, capable of contacting her should be enough evidence to suggest that he knew of her abilities for a long time running. If he came to know about the attack moments before, he couldn’t have possibly explained people disappearing around him. So, how did he know that it was an appropriate time to send a distress signal, and not the one in New York?
We hope we will find the answers on March 8, 2019 when Captain Marvel hits the theaters around the globe. Avengers 4 releases on May 3, 2019.
