Why Ginny Weasley Is the Best Character in the HP Series

Fierce, fearless, and fabulous—book Ginny slays and no one can say otherwise.

When I think back on every time I have watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1, the cringey feeling that comes with Bonnie Wright saying the line "shoelace" and reaching down to tie Dan's shoe hits me all over again. You see, book Ginny was fierce. Movie Ginny—not so much.

Now, I do not credit this to bad casting. Bonnie Wright is amazing and watching her outside of Potter definitely shows her true colors. I credit this to bad writing. Overall, I love the work that Steve Kloves did with the screenplay but Ginny's character was ridiculously underwritten.

I've compiled the following list for two kinds of people:

  1. Those who have only seen the movies and do not know the brilliance that is Ginny Weasley
  2. Those who know and love book Ginny and just want to appreciate her all over again

Here are my all-time favorite Ginny Weasley quotes, in no particular order.

1. When She Showed Her Love and Admiration for Her Two Older Brothers

"The thing about growing up with Fred and George is that you sort of start thinking anything's possible if you've got enough nerve."

2. When She Told Harry Off for Acting Like a Child

“Well, that was a bit stupid of you,” said Ginny angrily, “seeing as you don’t know anyone but me who’s been possessed by You-Know-Who, and I can tell you how it feels.”

3. When She Put Aside Her Own Feelings Because She Knew Harry Had to Do What He Had to Do

“I knew you wouldn't be happy unless you were hunting Voldemort. Maybe that's why I like you so much.”

4. When She Acknowledged Just How Gryffindor-esque Harry Was

Harry: "Ginny, listen...I can't be involved with you anymore. We've got to stop seeing each other. We can't be together."

Ginny: "It's for some stupid, noble reason, isn't it?”

5. When She Was Known for Being Fierce, Even by Her Own Family

George: "Yeah, size is no guarantee of power. Look at Ginny."

Harry: "What d'you mean?"

George: "You've never been on the receiving end of one of her Bat-Bogey Hexes, have you?"

(I know this isn't a quote from Ginny, but I think we can let that part slide.)

6. When She Took a Good Idea and Made It Brilliant

"Yeah, the D.A.'s good, only let's make it stand for Dumbledore's Army because that's the Ministry's worst fear, isn't it?"

7. When This Adorable Moment Happened and We All Cheered from Behind the Pages of Our Books

"Harry looked around; there was Ginny running towards him; she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. And without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her."

(Not a quote at all, but come on. This moment is perfect.)

8. When She Told Ron Off for Acting Like She Was Too Young to Do Anything Real:

"I’m three years older than you were when you fought You Know Who over the Sorceror’s Stone and it’s because of me Malfoy’s stuck back in Umbridge’s office with giant flying bogeys attacking him!"

9. When She Admitted to Harry How Strong Her Feelings Had Always Been

"I never really gave up on you. Not really. I always hoped... Hermione told me to get on with life, maybe go out with some other people, relax a bit around you, because I never used to be able to talk if you were in the room, remember? And she thought you might take a bit more notice if I was a bit more—myself."

10. When She Immediately Corrected Neville for Thinking He Was Insignificant Next to Harry

Neville: "I'm nobody."

Ginny: "No, you're not."

11. When She Simultaneously Insulted Romilda, Flirted with Harry, and Joked About Ron

Ginny: "You’d think people had better things to gossip about. Three dementor attacks in a week, and all Romilda Vane does is ask me if it’s true you’ve got a hippogriff tattooed across your chest."

Harry: "What did you tell her?"

Ginny: "I told her it’s a Hungarian Horntail. Much more macho."

Harry: "Thanks. And what did you tell her Ron’s got?

Ginny: "A Pygmy Puff, but I didn’t say where."

12. When She Came up with This

"Phlegm"

*I saved the best two for last.*

This, ladies and gents, is the real Ginny Weasley. The Ginny who rolls her eyes, flips her hair, and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks of her. The one who every boy chases and every girl admires. The one who can hold her own with anyone from Ron to Draco Malfoy to Bellatrix Lestrange. The star quidditch player, queen of the Bat Bogey Hex, and only girl who could manage living with six older brothers. Ginny Weasley is brilliant and one of my favorite characters that J.K. Rowling ever wrote.
