Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Anime

When I look back at the anime that I fell in love with—his was back in the summer of 2015—I always thank my younger self for getting into Yu-Gi-Oh!, this amazing, inspiring anime that I will never forget and let go. I've learned so much from this anime like friendship, Egyptian history, the card game (duel monsters), and it even makes my day smile.

I will explain what the anime is about, in case anybody wants to check out this anime. If you're into something new, you're bored with your life and you have nothing to watch, then this is something you need to give a shot.

But before we start talking Yu-Gi-Oh! lets first take a look at how it all started and the beginning of this franchise! It all started with the first anime called just Yu-Gi-Oh! in Japan.

'Yu-Gi-Oh!' in Japan but, by the fans, known as Season 0.

Yu-Gi-Oh! First Series by Toei (1998)

In this series, basically what this anime is all about is this protagonist and his second personality (Atem), who is the greatest duelist alive. When he was a Pharaoh, he sealed himself away with evil known as Zorc. Three thousand years later, a boy named "Yugi" freed his other soul from the millennium puzzle. It takes him about eight years for him to solve it. That's when he gains another soul inside him and he never notices that he has another personality until later in the anime. To the outside world, Yugi is just a regular high school student, but secretly, Yugi, and his other soul, are protecting the world from those who abuse the millennium items. And one day, his other soul/personality finally remembers his past. He also remembers his name so he can defeat the dark lord, Zorc, once and for all. This is the reason why they call this anime "The King Of Games," because that's what the protagonist does—he saves the day, and battles people in games and wins for justice!

Dark Yugi and His Shadow Games!

Yami No Game!

Dark Yugi doesn't challenge people to a duel of Duel Monsters. Instead, he would challenge them to a Shadow Game, where he would then explain the rules. However, the person in question would cheat and the Doors of Darkness would open, then Dark Yugi would do a Penalty Game upon the person, and usually whatever they obsess over the most would be their nightmare.

That was the first series that I started watching. Since this series never made it to the west, nor Europe, I decided to watch it from the beginning and then the anime that everyone knows today, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, which is the sequel to the first series but known as just Yu-Gi-Oh! in America.

The Sequel to the First 'Yu-Gi-Oh!' Series, Called 'Duel Monsters!'

Yu-Gi-Oh! in America (Duel Monsters in Japan).

Duel Monsters, originally known as Magic and Wizards, is the card game played in the various Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and anime series. It was created by Pegasus J. Crawford, who made the card designs on the ancient Egyptian carvings and hieroglyphs.

Duel Monsters is heavily centered around the card game, with plot details revealed between game turns.

Card Game Mechanics

Playing the game Duel Monsters

Well, the game is kinda complex, but it will make sense once you try. There are two players in each Duel. In the anime, both players have 2,000 life points, but later in the anime have 4,000 life points (in real life the game is played with 8,000 life points as in present time). Technically, what the point in this game is, is to take down your opponent's life points to zero before the opponent does to you. The reason why Duel Monsters takes place a lot in this anime is that they are sponsored by Konami and they want to sell the card game and make it a success. If their company, Konami, goes well, they can continue with more spinoff series for Yu-Gi-Oh so they can keep advertising the game. Each player starts with 40-60 cards. The game is all about monsters and trying to destroy your opponents' monsters, too. If the player runs out of cards in their deck, they lose. Now, in the anime, usually if a player loses, they not only lose in the game, but they get humiliated and hurt like if the game was real. Based on some occasions in the anime, some duels are taken seriously, where if you lose in the duel, you also lose your soul and die.

This is why I love 'Yu-Gi-Oh!'

So there you have it, guys, that's what Yu-Gi-Oh! is all about. The card game is what also helped make the anime more popular when it was released outside of Japan. So now that you know what Yu-Gi-Oh! is all about. That's what makes it a great anime and I totally love this show to death. I remember every time when I was bored or had nothing to do, I would always watch this and it would make my day happy. Thank you for your time reading all this. If you grew up watching Yu-Gi-Oh! then you probably already know what I mean when I say "it's time to dd-dd-dd-dd-duel!" If you ever come across this anime or article and you are interested in watching this anime, be sure to watch the Japanese dub as it was originally intended, but if you're an old school fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! and you like reading or learning about Yu-Gi-Oh! then, by all means, thank you for your time.
