Why I'm Tired of Remakes and Reboots

Hollywood has clearly run out of ideas.

Remakes and reboots, oh my. It's seems like that's all I've been seeing over the last several years. Now before I proceed any further, let me be clear of something: I'm not against all remakes and reboots. There are some that I like and dislike. So I thought I'd get that out of the way. I'll be giving my two cents on why Hollywood should come up with new ideas, as opposed of them doing constantly doing remakes and reboots.

In late 2015, I read an article regarding plans for a Ghostbusters movie coming out in theaters the following year, which would later be called Ghostbusters: Answer The Call. It was released in theaters in the summer of 2016. Around February of that year, I sat down and watched the entire trailer and honestly, I couldn't get into it. I didn't laugh one time and after I checked it out, I was disappointed. The theme song was terrible and hard to stomach. The trailer received many dislikes on YouTube and came to the conclusion that I wasn't going to see it. It wasn't worth spending my money on. I asked numerous people on my Facebook and Instagram pages if they had plans of seeing the movie. A majority of them said that they wouldn't even go near it. Not because it had four women in the movie. It was a movie that had no business of rebooting in the first place. Most people also said it was a slap in the face to the late Harold Ramis' legacy and the franchise in general. Don't get me wrong. I love Ghostbusters, butthe movie would've been slightly better if Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, or anyone from the original movie made cameo appearances. The movie would've done somewhat better at the box office.

When I stated my opinion about the Ghostbusters reboot, some women on Facebook accused me of being a woman hater, which I wasn't. Me not liking a movie or trailer doesn't equate to me having a dislike of women. I'm all for women making it big in Hollywood and also making a name for themselves. People have the right to like or not like certain movies and TV shows being remade and rebooted, because not every one of them are worthy of being shown. Sometimes they are successful, while others can be epic fails. It's the roll of the dice and risky. It doesn't mean that person is sexist or bitter.

The one piece of advice I would give the directors, writers, and producers in Hollywood is this: come up with new material. Remaking and rebooting TV shows and movies are not going to pique the interests of everyone. It tends to turn them off after a while. Remember the Jem and the Holograms movie that came out in October 2015? It bombed and earned only $2.3 million at the box office and received negative reviews. Like I said earlier, I'm not against all remakes and reboots. It's just that Hollywood is becoming lazy and needs to step their game up. Honestly, I tend to like sequels a lot more, because they keep me interested and curious to know what happens next. For me, I'd like to see new substance on the big screen as opposed to countless remakes and reboots shown.

I would like to know everyone's opinion about remakes and reboots in general. Do you think that Hollywood needs to come up with new ideas, and if so, what advice would you give them?
