Why Tommy and Kim Belong Together

The Real Power Couple

I love Power Rangers; let me clarify, I love the ORIGINAL Power Rangers. I can't make it past season three. Here is why;

I hate Katherine. The character was completely over the top, silly and unnecessary, and it just adds insult to injury that Tommy started dating her after the "Dear John" letter. Let me explain;

Katherine was manipulated by Rita and Zed much like Tommy was, but Kat's goal was to ruin the relationship between Kim and Tommy, bringing him back into Rita's circle. Ok, fine, that was an interesting storyline, then, Kim goes off to train for the Pan am games? (Something like that) and leaves the team, and WHO replaces her? KATHERINE. I understand Zordon wants to give her a chance like he did with Tommy and I think that was cool. Unnecessary, but they needed a pink ranger.

My issue is that, in my opinion, there is ZERO chemistry between Tommy and Katherine, it's almost like they were in this mindset of "Tommy must be with the Pink Ranger" after the Dear John letter, it would have been perfectly ok for Tommy to remain single for a while; he didn’t HAVE to be in a relationship, especially one so quickly. I probably would have accepted the change better if Tommy had waited a while before hooking up with Kat, it seemed he went from 0-100 very quickly. Wasn’t Kim his great love? Why couldn’t he realistically mourn that loss? There is no problem with that, focus on another couple, Aisha and Rocky would have been interesting, or even Billy, why was the focus on Tommy?

And let's talk about that letter... I don't think Kim wrote it, I never have, so who wrote it?

Two theories; Rita, or Kat herself.

Rita, to break his heart and spirit to weaken him. (The most likely theory.) Rita would want to see Tommy Oliver's heart broken and crushed, wanted to see him weak from the loss of Kimberly.

Kat, because even after the spell was broken she wanted Tommy, and with Kim out of the way, she just needed to get him to forget her, so in theory she wrote the letter to achieve the same effect as Rita, but putting him in a vulnerable state so she could move in to gain his affection.

Either way I am sure that Kim got a similar letter, which would be why neither of them contacted the other later on.

Tommy Oliver and Kimberly Hart were meant to be and are still talked about in the series, the forever red episode mentioned Kim, but there is never any mention of Kathrine in later series or incarnations of the show.

I know my narrative keeps changing from the show to real life in my explanations, but I think both are important when exploring this issue. The writers obviously didn’t consider other options.

Power Rangers is a show deeply engrained into my childhood, like most girls Tommy Oliver was my first crush and in 2017 at Flordia Supercon I was able to meet the actors behind this power couple, both are such amazing and compassionate people, during a Q&A, someone asked about the fate of Tommy and Kim, neither really had an answer. In my mind, eventually they found each other again and came to terms with their loss and found forgiveness in each other. I like to think Tommy is still a Doctor and Kim perhaps is working as a coach, they have a house and kids and maybe even help the Rangers from time to time.

Further proof that the Falcon and Crane will forever be a Power Couple. (Pun intended.)

    I feel like I could have written this. I feel traumatized as a child how it went down. I mean it looked really bad for Kat to end up with Tommy after initially trying to come between him and Kim. Nothing was wrong with keeping Kim and Tommy long distance. In the Turbo movie you could see Tommy and Kim still had that spark. I hated Kat for so long because of this. I stopped watching actively when Kim left. Felt like a member of my family left me.
