Will Ferrell Won't Return to the Roxbury for a Sequel, but He May Step Back into 'Step Brothers'

In Will Ferrell's vast filmography, there is bound to be one movie that makes you hold your stomach from the sheer amount of belly laughs.

In Will Ferrell's vast filmography, there is bound to be one movie that makes you hold your stomach from the sheer amount of belly laughs. But Ferrell's track record when it comes to sequels is less than stellar (see: Anchorman 2 and Zoolander 2), so even though some fans want to see new installments to his old films, other fans feel that he should stick with new ideas. Now Ferrell himself is addressing which roles he'd be willing to return to.

While speaking with Andy Cohen as part of the Watch What Happens Live After Show, a beaming fan called in wondering whether we will ever see a sequel to 1998's A Night At The Roxbury or 2003's Christmas classic, Elf. As #WillFerrell likes to toy with our emotions, his answer caused the studio audience to jump for joy for a split second then immediately crushed all hopes for a potential sequel:

“I’ve got great news for you… No."

Frankly, I would love to see how Doug and Steve Butabi are handling the advancements in rhythm 20 years after their head-bobbing shenanigans at the Roxbury.

Still, Cohen asked if there were any other films that Ferrell would want to revisit. Ferrell rejected a return to the Old School fraternity, but admits there have been discussions about revisiting 2008's R-rated Step Brothers::

"We talked a little bit about Step Brothers... So who knows? But, at the same time, you like to create new things."

Seeing where Brennan and Dale are in their lives 10 or so years following the original could be fun. (Is Ferrell still utilizing fake testicles to rub on John C. Reilly's drum set?) The actors have a fantastic working relationship with director Adam McKay, as they previously collaborated on Talladega Nights and the upcoming Holmes and Watson. The original Step Brothers earned over $128 million at the worldwide box office on a measly $65 million budget and is still quoted today, so I'm certain the studio would love to give the go ahead on a potential sequel.

While a sequel is an intriguing concept, there is always the looming possibility of it falling into the terrible-comedy-sequels camp. For every 22 Jump Street there is the revolting smell of a Dumb And Dumber To, which completely disregards everything loved about the original in favor of poop and fart jokes. For now, without official confirmation of a Step Brothers 2, purists can thankfully hang back and continue to rewatch the brilliance of the original.

For all you Will Ferrell sequel lovers of the internet, don't fret! He and the entire cast of 2015's hit Daddy's Home will return, along with John Lithgow and Mel Gibson, to the upcoming comedy-sequel Daddy's Home 2.

In the meantime, you can check out Ferrell's latest comedy #TheHouse starring Amy Poehler, Jason Mantzoukas and not Mariah Carey, currently in theaters.
