Will Hellboy 3 See Hellboy Go to Hell?

If you've been keeping up, a few weeks ago Guillermo del Toro announced he's moving forward with another installment in his line of #Hellboy movies. Del Toro went to Twitter with a poll to find out how many fans would be interested in a third Hellboy movie and an enormous response was followed by the director announcing his next step, which is to speak with comic creator, #MikeMignola on making Hellboy 3 a reality.

Del Toro hasn't spoken on the matter yet, but we can assume he's contacted Mignola and the two are sorting out the details. Mike Mignola has no reason to reject the offer but he might have some reservations, determinate on where Hellboy's story will go next. If the story makes sense, then Mignola will likely be on board, meaning the next step would require them to approach a studio to bring #Hellboy3 to life.

Where Will 'Hellboy 3' Take the Future King of Hell?

As it stands, the status of Hellboy 3 is very early on in development. While it is still too early to determine what the focus of the film will be, Hellboy's story will likely focus on his origins and how his origins set him up to become the new ruler of Hell.

Since the Hellboy line of movies were initially intended to be a trilogy, it would make sense for the third Hellboy movie to address Hellboy's origins, finally putting a close to a story that was supposed to see him become the king of Hell. However, Hellboy 3 could see Hellboy embrace his destiny and become the rightful ruler of Hell. If either of those scenarios are to play out, Hellboy 3 could be inspired by the comic series, Hellboy In Hell.

Brief Summary of 'Hellboy In Hell' Comics

The comic series, Hellboy In Hell followed Hellboy as he ventured through Hell after he was murdered by the witch, Nimue. In those adventures, Hellboy met many faces from his past, including those he'd killed in previous stories like "The Wild Hunt." Apart from familiar faces, he also became acquainted with members of his own family.

Astaroth, Hellboy's uncle, came to his side to convince Hellboy of his right (and destiny) to sit on the throne of Hell. Astaroth doesn't succeed in persuading Hellboy and he grows tired of trying to convince him, so Astaroth commands his sons to take the right for themselves. The problem is that the only way for them to do that is to remove Hellboy's stone hand. They need Hellboy's hand because it is given to the person deemed worthy of ruling Hell, and the hand serves as a key to opening a doorway between Hell and Earth.

How Can 'Hellboy In Hell' Influence the Plot of 'Hellboy 3'?

When we consider how the events of Hellboy In Hell could potentially inspire Hellboy 3, an adventure through Hell might be the right way to go. Hellboy's origins were touched on in the original film but Hellboy is still unaware of his destiny.

There's also the mysterious nature of Hellboy's right hand that was only teased in the first Hellboy movie. The hand is a key item in Hellboy's universe and is a signature piece for a very good reason. Hellboy's original right arm was cut off after his birth and replaced with the huge stone hand known as the Right Hand Of Doom. Unfortunately, Hellboy was dropped into Earth's dimension before anyone could ever explain to him why he has a large stone for a right hand.

While tones and elements of Hellboy In Hell could influence Hellboy 3, the plot of the film could be influenced by any number of other Hellboy comics or graphic novels, not limited to Hellboy: The Wild Hunt, Hellboy: The Fury, or Hellboy: Seeds Of Destruction.

There's also a good chance that Mike Mignola and Guillermo del Toro are crafting an original story, utilizing elements from the comics while the base concept picks up where Hellboy 2: The Golden Army left off. The conclusion of the film saw Liz pregnant with two of Hellboy's offspring, which are assuredly going to play a pivotal role in Hellboy 3 unless Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) doesn't return.
