Will The Sin-Eater Appear In 'Daredevil' Season 3?

With filming set to start on Daredevil Season 3 in October, we're beginning to get a strong sense of just where this series is going. The dramatic closing scene of The Defenders left fans thrilled at echoes of 'Born Again,' one of Frank Miller's most-loved stories, but we can also be confident that Marvel will mix things up a little. After all, it would be boring for comic book fans if we're able to predict every twist and turn!

That Hashtag Show has just added an intriguing rumor to the mix — According to a fascinating new character profile, it looks like a fan favorite Marvel villain may soon make his debut in Daredevil Season 3...

Here's What We Know

Like all character breakdowns, this one's identity is hidden using the code-name 'Steve.' Here's the summary:

"[STEVE] 28-35, 5’9-6’1, Open ethnicity. An athletic but socially awkward FBI Agent, needs structure and rules to suppress the darkness inside himself. Athletic with medium build, responsible and resourceful, hair trigger temper. SERIES REGULAR"

There's only one Marvel character who perfectly fits this description and that's Stanley Carter, better known to comic book fans as the first Sin-Eater. Carter was a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent whose mind was warped by an experimental super-soldier program. In the comics, Carter moved to New York and became a detective in the NYPD. Unfortunately, the death of his partner was the final straw for Carter's troubled mind; he became obsessed with killing anyone who "sinned" by abusing authority.

As the Sin-Eater, Carter's first victim was fellow police officer Jean De Wolff — a close friend of Spider-Man's. Soon after, the ex-cop took on both Spider-Man and Daredevil, targeting those he believed to be guilty of sin. Carter was eventually unmasked, but that didn't exactly make the city any safer; the public was furious to learn that a cop had been responsible for these murders. The situation escalated, forcing Spider-Man and Daredevil to step in and save Carter's life from a brutal mob.

Why This Character Is A Perfect Fit For Daredevil

The first two seasons of Daredevil have carefully stressed the religious side of Matt Murdock. A villain known as Sin-Eater, whose warped mind has turned him into a wrathful vigilante? He's pretty much made for Daredevil. That's especially the case for Season 3, where we're eagerly awaiting our first encounter with Maggie Murdock - Matt's mother, a nun.

What's more, the Sin-Eater taps into other familiar themes that will run through Daredevil. Conceptually, the character dynamic is one step removed from the one we saw develop between Daredevil and the Punisher. The key difference here though is that the Sin-Eater is worse than Frank Castle. He's indiscriminate in his killings, often murdering innocent people by accident, and he doesn't care who winds up caught in the line of fire. While The Punisher is an antihero vigilante, the Sin-Eater is an outright monster.

As in Daredevil Season 2, this dynamic will force Matt Murdock to face a terrifying question: to what extent does his vigilantism inspire the worst of humanity to rise up and fight as well? The Punisher already caused Matt to doubt his path, but the Sin-Eater would push him even further.

A Complicating Factor

Now, it's worth noting that there is one complication. The Sin-Eater is traditionally associated with Spider-Man, and as a result, he's licensed to Sony. (Sony was hacked back in 2014, and leaked files included a Licensing Agreement with Marvel. The Sin-Eater appears on that list as a Sony property.)

That said, this doesn't rule the Sin-Eater out completely. The relationship between Marvel and Sony has improved greatly over the years, and it's not inconceivable that Marvel Television and Sony Pictures could reach an agreement over the Sin-Eater. At the end of the day, he's a relatively minor character, and I can't imagine Sony would have ever planned to use him on the big screen.

Chalk this one up as a rumor for now, #Marvel fans, but don't be surprised if it turns out to be true. After all, The Sin-Eater is a perfect villain for #Daredevil Season 3, building on themes of religion and vigilantism that have been central to the series right from the start. That said, in a season that's sure to feature the return of Vincent d'Onofrio's Kingpin too, the Sin-Eater is unlikely to be the only villain that will put Matt Murdock to the test...
