Today, we received our first glimpses at the costume Chris Hemsworth will don as Thor in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok. No official images have been released as of yet but the newest set image, provided courtesy of Twitter handle @HeroMovies4Life, has given us our first glimpse at the God of Thunder and the image is quite noteworthy for a few reasons.

For one, we can see that Thor's armor has changed significantly since we last saw him in Avengers: Age of Ultron. And there's also the lack of Thor's hammer, Mjonir in the picture; could be missing due to the picture being taken. But more importantly, Thor's armor seems to have been toned down from the high-grade Asgardian armor he's worn in the past to a makeshift, gladiatorial armor which could mean nothing or something even grander in the scheme of the MCU.

Will Thor find himself without Mjonir during the events of Thor: Ragnarok?

Thor's new costume doesn't say much, especially when it could've been put together within a variety of different contexts but it appears as though the drastic alterations in Thor's costume might be due to Thor losing his powers once again. As to why the difference in armor tells us this is simple.

Going back to Thor (2011). When Thor was stripped of Mjornir and his powers by Odin, the first thing to be stripped of him were the emblems embedded in Thor's chest-pieces. Those detials may seem insignificant right now, but with his new armor resembling something more warrior friendly, without the emblems as well, it appears as though Thor has constructed his own makeshift armor to compensate for his loss of demi-god power.

Who could be responsible for taking Thor's powers again?

The reasoning behind Thor creating a makeshift armor might have to do with his quest in Thor: Ragnarok. But more importantly, how would Thor lose his powers? Odin isn't around to take Mjonir from Thor and it doesn't seem like an antagonist in Thor: Ragnarok would be able to take Thor's abilities. However, it may be Loki who is responsible for Thor losing his demi-god powers. Or, there's also a slight possibility that either Hela (Kate Blanchett) or the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) could be responsible for taking Thor's demi-god powers - both Hela and the Grandmaster are expected to make their debut in Thor: Ragnarok.

In that scenario, it would make sense for Thor to have lost his powers. Loki will undoubtedly be up to his old tricks, and one of those tricks will probably rob Thor of his abilities. And once that happens, Thor's story arc which includes Bruce Banner a.k.a. the Hulk, will probably see Thor venture out with Hulk to find a new source of power or to return Mjonir to him - entirely speculative for the moment.

Where we'll see Thor at the end of Ragnarok, possibly with a new weapon in hand?

The conclusion of Thor: Ragnarok will likely depict Thor regaining Mjonir and his demi-god powers but the conclusion of the film might divert in a direction no one sees coming. It's possible that Thor will indeed lose his hammer, Mjonir for good but it's not like Thor can't find or make another Asgardian weapon of destruction. Marvel Comics has also depicted Thor wielding a variety of Asgardian weapons, aside from Mjonir, which means the Thor of the MCU could also potentially find a new weapon. But then that leaves the matter of Mjonir unattended.

In the scenario of Thor putting the thought of Mjonir to the side, with a new weapon finding its way into his hands, Mjonir will be without a wielder and that could potentially see someone else take on the role of God of Thunder, and possessor of Mjonir. Most would assume that Beta Ray Bill would be next in line to carry Mjonir, but it may be Steve Rogers who takes a hold of Mjonir.

Could Steve Rogers wield Mjonir? And would it work in the MCU?

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rogers is left without a place in the world, he's no longer an Avenger and can no longer hold the title of Captain America which means Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is going to need a new role in the MCU.

Entirely speculative for the moment, but in the scenario of Steve Rogers needing a weapon to protect himself from a massive threat, Mjonir might come to his side to protect him. We've already seen that Steve Rogers could become worthy enough to wield Mjonir, during his exhibition of strength inAvengers: Age of Ultron. And that subtle exhibition may have been hinting at Steve Rogers being in the ideal position to become the next wielder of Mjonir. More on Rogers' potential to be worthy of Mjonir later.

For now, take a gander at the three set images released from the set of Thor: Ragnarok, featuring Thor, Loki, and Odin!
