As Season 1 of Westworld bowed out in a barrage of bullets and bombshells, some of us are still reeling from Christopher Nolan and Lisa Joy's epic Western. Unsurprisingly, #Westworld was commissioned for a second season before the first was even half way through, but with an agonizing wait on the horizon, the news on how the show will continue is only slowly trickling through.

It is sure to be pistols at dawn for the second season of #HBO's robot-romp, but there could be one more person missing from the O.K. Corral when the show returns. With an all-star cast of Evan Rachel Wood, Jimmi Simpson, Thandie Newton, and Jeffrey Wright, nearly everyone's lives were left in the balance as the premiere season came to a close.

Speaking to GQ, Jimmi Simpson said he wasn't sure whether his characterr, William, could return for the show's second season:

"So far, my involvement in [Season 2] is unclear. If they have more for William, I would assume it would be a whole new kind of story. Because I feel like this story, the love affair [with Evan Rachel Wood’s character, Dolores], we know everything, we know what happens, we don’t have to belabor that point."

As of now, Ed Harris is the only cast member confirmed to return, and two could be seen as a crowd. The clues were littered along the way, but the season finale also contained the huge reveal that Harris's Man in Black was actually the aged version of William in present day. With flashbacks and funerals, Westworld's convoluted timeline was sometimes hard to follow, but some clever so-and-sos had clocked William as MIB early on.

It would certainly be hard to see how young William would fit into the new narrative, especially considering that Season 2 will primarily focus on the likes of the newly introduced Shogun World and the aftermath of Dolores shooting up a park full of patrons. Given that Season 1 hopped back in time to tell the story of Simpson as William and Jeffrey Wright as Arnold, you can argue the case of "Do we really need to go back?"

Perhaps acting in Simpson's favor is the number of loose ends that Season 1 offered. The 41-year-old actor remains open to the idea that young William could yet return:

"But if they have a reason — I mean, it was the greatest set I’ve ever worked on. But we’re all speculating what Season 2 will be, and I think it’ll be something that will blow our minds, to the degree that the first season did. But I wouldn’t be surprised if William showed up Season 3 or something."

There are over 30 years of William's history to go over, including what happened to him to force him down such a dark path to become the grizzled MIB; also, many fans were left wondering what happened to Jimmi's brother-in-law, Logan, who was last seen strapped nude to a horse and sent off into the distance. We know that William at some point became a high-flying member of the park's board, but that rise to power is yet to be explained.

Ben Barnes has also remained silent on whether he could return as Logan, but with the expected date for Season 2 sometime in 2018, the casting for Westworld Season 2 will likely be in its early phase still. One thing is for sure, Westworld's return will herald a whole new era of technology and terror for the Delos Corporation!
