With Ayesha Coming To 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2', Can Adam Warlock Be Far Behind?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading towards Avengers: Infinity War, and one step along the journey is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2! So far, though, fans of Marvel's cosmic superheroes have been surprised at one notable absence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

Adam Warlock!

Meet Adam Warlock!

Inspired by Jesus Christ Superstar, in 1972 Marvel editor-in-chief Roy Thomas and penciller Gil Kane redesigned an old Stan Lee character as a 'Messiah' figure. Adam Warlock was created by a group of scientists calling themselves the Enclave, and was intended to be an artificial, perfect human; originally he simply called himself HIM. He's a massively powerful and cosmic being who can create a cocoon for restoration and self-preservation.

It's impossible to overstate Warlock's powerset; he's easily one of the most powerful beings in Marvel Comics. You're talking superhuman strength, speed, and stamina; an ability to manipulate so-called "Quantum Magic" to project energy beams, teleport, and even create wormholes that enable him to travel independently through space!

It took writer Jim Starlin to truly turn Adam Warlock into a hit, though; as part of his focus on Marvel's cosmic side, which saw him create the character of Thanos, Starlin brought Warlock into the saga of the Infinity Gems. Warlock was tied particularly closely to the Soul Gem, which was used as a mechanism to involve him in some pretty trippy spiritual journeys! Ever since, when there's been a cosmic event, you've had Adam Warlock. When the Infinity Gems are in play, the odds are high you'll find Adam Warlock nearby.

Warlock and Thanos are arch-foes.

Fans have been excited about the possibility of seeing Adam Warlock on the big screen for quite some time, not least because of a glimpse of Warlock's cocoon in Guardians of the Galaxy.

The cocoon's behind Howard.

What are Warlock's chances of entering the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2?

Warlock's chances of entering the MCU are improving practically by the minute. Comic Book Movie and Joblo have independently reported that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will feature the character of Ayesha, played by Elizabeth Debicki. A little-known-character, Ayesha was also created by the Enclave. In fact, she was intended to be the Eve to Warlock's Adam, the HER to his HIM. While this is only a rumor, Joblo in particular has a good reputation for having sources inside Marvel Studios, so it's looking pretty concrete.

This does throw in an interesting wrinkle. Guardians of the Galaxy left us faced with a curious question: who is Star-Lord's father? Fans have long speculated that the father is actually Adam Warlock, but - if the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 involves the Enclave - then I suspect he won't qualify as an 'ancient' being. Instead, I think it's rather more likely that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will be something of an 'origin story'.

Fans of Marvel's cosmic range have long wondered when we'd be getting to encounter Adam Warlock. I'd go so far as to say it's almost certain Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will be Adam's cinematic début, and that he'll be sure to play a major role in Avengers: Infinity War.

Like most superheroes, he's changed costumes a lot.
