Over the past few weeks, the plot of #AgentsOfSHIELD has been centered around the Framework and trying to get everyone out alive. It's been a lengthy stay in the virtual world but the agents have successfully made their way out, with the exception of Director Mace and Mack.

Mack decided to stay behind with his daughter but we can safely assume he'll be forced out against his will, seeing as how Coulson and the S.H.I.E.L.D. team now have control of the Framework. Mace on the other hand, is a different story altogether.

Mace died trying to protect his S.H.I.E.L.D. comrades within the Framework and there's no visible way to bring Mace back (yet). That said, this unfortunate death not only leaves the S.H.I.E.L.D. team a man down but they also have to start considering who will take over for Mace as director of S.H.I.E.L.D. There are three logical candidates to become the next director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and one I threw in for fun just for those of you hoping for the Marvel TV and movie crossover.

Phil Coulson

The most obvious pick is #PhilCoulson. He's been in the director's seat before and he's had more than enough time working behind the scenes to place himself in that position again. Plus, Coulson's trip through the Framework definitely showed that he has the leadership skills to lead S.H.I.E.L.D. down the right path so he's probably the best pick at the moment.

Gen. Glenn Talbot

Glenn Talbot, the government-appointed liaison to S.H.I.E.L.D., is actually a more believable candidate than Coulson. After Coulson betrayed Talbot's trust multiple times, it doesn't seem like he'll be ready to hand over the reins to Coulson just yet. Unless Talbot has someone else more capable in mind then he's likely to take over as director, that is until he can find a fitting replacement. So, for the time being, Gen. Talbot may become the head honcho.

Daisy "Quake" Johnson

Daisy may be a controversial candidate to become the new director but she has what it takes, at least according to Coulson. If you recall, Coulson jokingly talked about Daisy taking over one day, so why not now? It also doesn't hurt that Daisy's comic origins have depicted her as director on more than one occasion so her character has the backstory for it. Then again, public opinion of Daisy has only very recently been repaired, and that was after director Mace endorsed Daisy on live television, proclaiming her to be a hero. Still, the public might not be too accepting of Daisy becoming director of S.H.I.E.L.D. after her stint as a vigilante.

Tony Stark

Before explaining why Stark could become the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., becoming director wouldn't require #RobertDowneyJr. appear on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at all. The main argument against Stark becoming director is that AoS couldn't afford RDJ's paycheck.

But it's feasible that RDJ could play the part of director from behind the scenes. We witnessed that same ploy being used in the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with #SamuelLJackson's Nick Fury. He was the director at the time but didn't appear on the series for the most part. We could also see another S.H.I.E.L.D. agent working as Stark's proxy, the way Maria Hill and Agent Coulson worked for Nick Fury.

As for the why, in the comics, Stark put his superhero career as Iron Man on hold while he took over as director of S.H.I.E.L.D. His transition from superhero to director actually takes place post-Civil War which is where we'll see Stark next in Spider-Man: Homecoming. So, Stark becoming director in the #MCU isn't that preposterous to consider.

Of course, the main reason why Stark could become director of S.H.I.E.L.D. is because #KevinFeige finally admitted that Marvel movies and television would likely eventually cross over. A potential crossover could see Stark entering the TV end of things, along with Coulson reentering the movie end of the MCU. We all want to see Agent Coulson reunited with the Avengers to see how they'll react to his resurrection. Then again, my money is on Tony Stark already knowing about it.

Coulson has been doing a good job staying out of the spotlight but Stark's much too clever to not take notice of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s activities, including all the events involving Coulson. Especially with his growing paranoia about the threats involving Earth. He's definitely matured as a superhero and is even training young heroes like Spider-Man so it's only logical for his next transition to be from superhero to director of S.H.I.E.L.D., unless he's destined for a darker fate in Avengers: Infinity War.

Who do you think should become the next director of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
