In this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. announced its new directive named The Worlds of DC. But what does this mean for fans of the comics and what are the possible future plans for their beloved heroes?

After the backlash that followed The Justice League, it seems that Warner Bros. has lost desire to compete with Marvel. Their hopes that The Justice League would have the same audience effect as The Avengers had back in 2012 were shattered as the movie underperformed at the box office with only 229 million domestically and 428 million worldwide. But now the studio has a chance to gain redemption from their fans with the new projects that will likely be seen on screen the following years.

'Aquaman'

This year’s SDCC presented us with the first trailer for Aquaman. Starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, the movie will include Aquaman’s half-brother The Ocean Master and Black Manta. Arthur Curry is recruited by Mera (Heard) as he must fight for the throne of Atlantis which is now occupied by Orm Marius (Patric Wilson) who plans to start a war with the surface world.

'Shazam'

It has been speculated for years whether Captain Marvel will receive his standalone movie. In the end of October, it was announced that Zachary Levi will star as the hero in yellow and red. The trailer that landed at SDCC introduced Billy Batson—a troubled youth who is adopted by Rosa and Victor Vasquez and receives a chance for a new life. He meets Freddy Freeman—a disabled kid who loves reading comic book movies as a way to escape the harsh reality of being bullied in school. After confronting Freddy’s bullies, Billy runs away by boarding the metro. At the last stop, he is transported to another reality where he meets the Wizard (Djimon Hounsou), who gives him the powers of Shazam. With the help of Freddy, Captain Marvel must harness his new powers as he has to face Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong), a mad scientist who is envious of Billy for being granted supernatural abilities. The audience will see their epic clash on the big screen in April 2019 when Shazam hits theatres.

Flash(point)?

Although it is still not officially announced, a Flash movie will surely be part of the Worlds of DC. It seems by a recent comment by Jeffrey Dean Morgan that the movie will not follow the storyline of The Flashpoint paradox but will be more of an origin story of the Flash. There is only speculation of what the plot will be but it most likely involves a major Flash villain like Captain Gold who appears in the Legion of Doom or Captain Boomerang who we saw in Suicide Squad.

The Batman

After the end of DCEU, it is more than probable that Ben Affleck will not return as the caped crusader. But Warner Bros. will not leave fans who have waited since 2012 without their favorite character’s solo movie. There has been wide speculation who the director will be, as the list of names included Affleck himself until 2017 when he officially declined this opportunity. It was announced that Matt Reeves of Planet of the Apes is working on a script. At 45, he will most probably give way to a younger actor as rumor has it that this will be Jake Gyllenhaal (37). It is said that the movie will follow the storyline of Batman Year One and will feature a Bruce Wayne in his early 30s in his first days as protector of Gotham.

Joker

In recent years there has been speculation that the clown prince of crime will get his spotlight on the big screen. Many famous names have been included in the list of potential candidates including Jude Law, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Joaquin Phoenix. It seems as if the last one is most likely to get things going. Rumors have it, that shooting will start in autumn of 2018 and the movie will be out in 2019. The storyline will most probably focus on the Joker’s origin which was shortly shown on the big screen in Tim Burton’s 1989 hit Batman. After an encounter with the Batman, a crime boss falls in a vat of chemicals where his face burns and his skin becomes white. After that, he starts calling himself The Joker and seeks revenge on the caped crusader.
