Wynonna Earp with Peacemaker

Ahead of the launch of season three of Wynonna Earp, let's take a look back at the first two seasons and what it is about this Canadian show, which is based on a comic book series, that makes for binge-worthy watching.

A Little Backstory...

Wynonna Earp is a descendant of Wyatt Earp, the legendary gunslinger. While Wyatt Earp had no children in real life, for the purpose of the show he does. Each of his descendants, the Earp heirs, inherit his gun— Peacemaker—at the age of 27, along with the task of ridding the world of Revenants (demonic beings from hell). There are 77 Revenants locked in the Ghost River Triangle, an area which includes Wynonna's hometown of Purgatory. The heir must kill all 77 before the next heir turns 27 or they will all resurrect. Not an easy task.

Enter Wynonna...

Wynonna, the middle daughter of Ward Earp, is the latest heir. Wynonna has not had an easy life, one that involved her being institutionalized for talking about demons, and losing her father and older sister, Willa, to an attack on their home when she was a young girl. She returns home after the death of her uncle, just as she turns 27.

Wynonna is a hard-drinking, foul-mouthed, force of nature who does not want her role as heir, but as she starts offing Revenants, she begins to feel a sense of purpose.

#WayHaught

Waverly Earp, Wynonna's little sister, never left Purgatory, but instead spent her time researching the Earp curse and learning everything she could about demons and the history of Purgatory.

Waverly started out dating local guy Champ, but soon developed feelings for Officer Nicole Haught. Their relationship has blossomed over the last two seasons and the hashtag WayHaught is trending.

Nicole is new to Purgatory and likes Waverly from their first meeting. It takes Waverly a while to catch up, but their relationship is one of the strongest on the show. Ex-wives and demon possession aside.

A Blast from the Past...

In the first episode, a mysterious man climbs out of a well. That man is John Henry 'Doc' Holliday, Wyatt's best friend. After making a deal with a witch, he gained longevity but has spent the last 100+ years at the bottom of a well. His loyalties are not clear in the beginning, but he soon pledges his loyalty to Wynonna. As an expert marksman, he is handy to have around.

Black Badge...

Deputy Marshall Xavier Dolls is a member of Black Badge, a special division that investigates the supernatural. He takes Wynonna on as his deputy and together they try to take out as many Revenants as possible. Dolls holds secrets of his own, but is always there to back up Wynonna.

The Supporting Cast...

Sheriff Nedley. Jeremy. Rosita. And of course, Bobo Del Rey. Every character is well developed and they have some great dialogue. Bobo is a personal favorite. While he is a Revenant, there is so much more to his story which is explored in season two. No character is really black or white and it is a tribute to the actors who play them, that the characters are so entertaining.

The show is fast becoming a cult hit. The cast has expanded since season one and continues to grow. With strong female leads, kick-ass action, and a great cast, it is hard not to like this show. If you are a fan of shows like Buffy or Charmed, then this is the show for you. You can check out season one and two on Netflix or DVD.
