X Men: Apocalypse Trailer: New Team, New Mutants, Same Wolverine?

The trailer gives us a glimpse of Wolverine's iconic, three-pronged adamantium claw.

In the beginning of the trailer, we're shown where Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr/Magneto have wound up after the events of "X-Men: Days of Future Past". It appears that everything is good in Charles Xavier's world, but not as much for his mutant counterpart in Erik/Magneto. From the dialogue in the trailer, we can hear Magneto saying how his family was taken from him, meaning that after "Days of Future Past", Magneto does manage to settle down somewhere with a family, but his family is taken from him. What or who could have been set upon Magneto and his family? Surely, none of Magneto's previous adversaries are still alive to enact some sort of vengeance, but maybe another character of the X-Men universe had something to do with it.

Magneto's place as a Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Magneto. Four Horseman.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is set to highlight En Sabah Nur's goal of acquiring his Four Horsemen, which means his need for Magneto to become one of them. Were En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse to see that Magneto won't join him while his family is in the picture, then it would be reasonable to assume that Apocalypse would acquire someone to remove Magneto's family from the equation; in order to push Erik/Magneto to Apocalypse's army. That person could be a disciple of Apocalypse, whose able to disguise him/herself in public, capable of killing Magneto's family, right under his nose; in that circumstance, the ideal disciple, whom has a comic-book history as one of Apocalypse's disciples could be that of Mister Sinister. All of that is unverified but there's plenty of room for Mister Sinister to have a place in "X-Men: Apocalypse". For now, Mister Sinister is just a speculative point, one person we can guarantee will be returning for at least one scene in the film, is that of "Wolverine".

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is back! Or is he?

In the last seconds of the trailer, we get a glimpse of Wolverine's iconic, three-pronged adamantium claw. All speculation aside, there's room for another clawed mutant to be introduced in "X-Men: Apocalypse", other than just Wolverine. We've seen screenshots of General William Stryker in the trailers for the film, implying that he'll be involved once again, likely working on the Weapon-X program; the same government project that gave Wolverine his adamantium laced skeleton. In the scenario that Stryker is once again working on Weapon-X, there could be another adamantium laced mutant walking around "X-Men: Apocalypse". Although the more defining clue that reveals that the clawed mutant previewed is in fact "Wolverine" is that Jean Grey(Sophie Turner) says in her dialogue that "they had help from a friend", right before we get the image of Wolverine's claw popping out. And there's a mass of bodies lying in front of Mystique, Jean Grey, and Scott Summers/Cyclops whom don't look like they've been burnt by Cyclops, nor hit by telepathy from Jean Grey. It's more than plausible to assume that Hugh Jackman is going to make a cameo appearance in "X-Men: Apocalypse". He may even be united with the entire cast for one image of the iconic 'X-Men' team all joined together(Charles Xavier, Hank McCoy/Beast, Quicksilver, Psylocke, Jean Grey, Scott Summers/Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, Alex Summers/Havoc, Logan/Wolverine, Storm, Angel, and Mystique).

X-Men Apocalypse, Wolverine.

Though the casting of Wolverine during the timeline of "X-Men: Apocalypse" will have to portray a younger Wolverine, not the aged 'Wolverine' from "X-Men: Days of Future Past". Meaning that the Wolverine we're supposedly going to see is the bone-clawed Wolverine we were introduced to in "X-Men: Days of Future Past(DOFP)". But then why was the claw teased, of adamantium not bone? That would mean there's going to be another clawed mutant in "X-Men: Apocalypse" rather than Wolverine returning. But here's where it all makes sense. After (DOFP), Wolverine is still without his adamantium claws, but with "X-Men: Apocalypse" happening some time after (DOFP), it sets up Wolverine to get a rewrite in the canon for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". We know that William Stryker is back as well, and the Wolverine of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" hasn't received his adamantium upgrade yet so the timeline could be synchronized to have Logan going through the Weapon-X program that gives him his adamantium skeleton, thus turning him into the "Wolverine". That theory could be proven true with the scene from the trailer, hinting that Wolverine was the one to help Jean Grey, Scott Summers, and Nightcrawler; but he's nowhere to be seen after. If Wolverine had been subjected to the Weapon-X program and then broke out, it would be the perfect place for Hugh Jackman to make his cameo appearance as Wolverine, slashing through William Stryker's henchmen as he goes through a feral rage, while at the same time, unwittingly helping his future "X-Men" comrades. That's a just theory for now.

Wolverine after Weapon-X program.

Quicksilver and Magneto will have an arc' to flesh out.

We also can hear in the dialogue of the trailer, that Quicksilver has learned of Magneto/Erik Lensherr being his father. Did Magneto/Erik return to the Maximoff family after the events of "X-Men: Days of Future Past"? It's possible the family he's said to have buried was that of the Maximoffs, except for Peter/Quicksilver that is. Quicksilver may be the familial link that draws Magneto's mind back from the control of Apocalypse when the confrontation does unfold. If there is any coming back for Magneto in "X-Men: Apocalypse".

Quiksilver.

Aside from Magneto and his branch of mutant offspring, there's another mutant heavily emphasized in the trailer who has potential to have a substantial amount of character development in "X-Men: Apocalypse". That being Jean Grey.

Jean Grey may become Phoenix in "X-Men: Apocalypse".

We get to hear Jean Grey with a few lines in the trailer, along with the last tag line reintroducing Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, with a tease of his iconic claws. But apart from her dialogue, there is a screenshot depicting Jean Grey that is of more interest. In said screenshot, we can see Jean Grey screaming out at something with a ferocity, and there's glass broken everywhere in the background of her, as if a shockwave of energy has erupted. That image could mean some growth is in Jean Grey's future. By growth, I mean evolution. Jean Grey's comic-book counterpart is known to have gone through a very well-known transformation, through most of her incarnations. The transformation for Jean Grey is into the "Phoenix". The phoenix is the representation of Jean Grey's uninhibited mutant abilities, there's no limit to her power. And from the screenshot captured in the trailer, it looks like an event in the film will be unlocking Jean Grey's latent mutant potential, beginning her transformation into the Phoenix.(sidenote: there's also been rumors circulating that the next chapter in the "X-Men" franchise will feature a 'Dark Phoenix' arc for Jean Grey.) Aside from the rumor, the image of Jean Grey using a higher extent of her mutant powers proves that her character will be completely fleshed out in "X-Men: Apocalypse". Possibly setting up Jean Grey/Phoenix, alongside Scott Summers/Cyclops and Nightcrawler to headline the new team of X-Men in the next chapter of the franchise(i.e X-Men: The New Mutants).

Jean Grey

What did you think of the new trailer for "X-Men: Apocalypse"? Is the film living up to the hype? And is Wolverine necessary in the film(my opinion is yes)? And is it in fact Wolverine with the claws, or is another clawed mutant going to be manufactured out of William Strker's Weapon-X program?

The classic lineup of X-Men are assembled here, excluding Nightcrawler who can't be seen, but there's an addition to the cast who can't be identified. The person standing directly behind Charles Xavier isn't Michael Fassbender whom plays Magneto, then who could it be? To reiterate, the classic lineup of X-Men are all assembled here. But there's someone missing from the picture, Wolverine. Could the tease of "Wolverine" in the trailer for the film have been a misdirection to persuade fans into believing that Hugh Jackman has returned as the "Wolverine"? When in fact, a new actor has been cast as a younger version of Wolverine. That theory would explain why there's an unidentified addition to this image of the classic lineup of 'X-Men'. I can't identify which actor that is, and the mystery actor isn't listed on the IMDB credits page for "X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)" either. So he could fit into the mystery role of a younger aged, Logan/Wolverine. And if Wolverine is set to have his origin story rewritten in "X-Men: Apocalypse", to remove "X-Men: Origins Wolverine" from the acceptable canon in the X-Men universe, then the idea of a new actor being introduced in the part of Wolverine makes sense.
