You'll Never Believe Just How Important Play-Doh Was to Guardians of the Galaxy!

Director James Gunn handed out Play-Doh on the set of 'Guardians of the Galaxy' to keep everyone motivated.

Guardians of the Galaxy was undeniably one of the most successful, influential, and just plain awesome superhero movies ever, there's no denying that. But the amount of work that went behind it, from the cast to the crew, is incredibly hard. Luckily, director James Gunn had the perfect way to keep everyone motivated. Moldable motivation in a tiny plastic jar.

Jars of Play-Doh kept everyone going.

"As some of you know, I gave out tiny jars of Play-Doh to people on the set of Guardians when they did an extraordinary job. If a stunt went exceptionally well, the stunt man would get a jar. If an explosion went off without compare, the special effects dude would get one. An actor with an extraordinary performance, a beautiful shot by the cinematographer, a wonderfully scheduled day by the AD - these were all causes for jars of Play-Doh. I did not give out that many - maybe forty jars over the course of our 85 day shoot. So they were highly coveted and sought after by much of the cast and crew. (On a side note, I also like to keep jars around to smell, because it brings back that feeling of pure childlike creativity - I swear to God this isn't an ad for Play-Doh, although it sounds like it!) Whatever the case, today I was touched by a jar of Play-Doh I received in the mail from a fan, for a job well done. I thought it was really sweet. Thanks, Nadima!"

Although, it did raise some questions:

This shows a lot about Gunn's style - and personality.

Not that I have anything against him, but can you imagine Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight trilogy) handing out jars of Play-Doh to his cast and crew? What about Zack Snyder (Man of Steel)? Sure, they could be really bright and bubbly people, but it doesn't show through in their movies, and that's what we see. Clearly, Gunn is ready to go the extra distance to deliver a truly spectacular performance. And just the colour and spontaneity of Play-Doh makes you want to think of the guy as an overgrown kid... right?
