Why is the young adult genre so popular?

It might surprise you to know that books are hot at the moment, especially in this age of social media and internet. One genre that really stands out because of its popularity is that of the young adult genre. You’re probably wondering, what exactly qualifies as a "young adult" book? Well, it needs to appeal to just that audience. Most have some form of romantic plot, it needs to deal with some issue that is relevant to the young generation, and the characters need to be relatable.

'Simon vs the Homosapiens Agenda'

This book is incredibly popular at the moment and rightly so. The story is a collection of beautiful moments and emotions. The main character, Simon, gives a narrative of his life in which he goes to school, hangs out with his friends, typical teenage stuff. The only problem is, he has a secret. No one knows that he is gay. The reader is taken on a rollercoaster as Simon accounts his life and his journey to revealing who he really is. The popularity of this book is down to the fact that it tackles the issue of sexuality, which can be hard to come to terms with for plenty of young people.

'Looking For Alaska'

This is a book that comes from the genius mind of John Green. In case you're one of the few people who doesn't know who this man is, he is the brains behind such works as The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns, and other fantastic books. Looking For Alaska is the touching tale of Miles, who begins college and ultimately falls in love with the vibrant and enigmatic Alaska. Miles is the socially awkward guy that so many young people can relate to whilst Alaska is the wild-hearted girl many of us aspire to be more like. Perhaps this is why so many people adore this book.

'Isla and the Happily Ever After'

This adorable love story comes from the mind of Stephanie Perkins. The book is told from the perspective of hopeless romantic Isla, who gains a place at the School of America in Paris. This is where she meets charming artist Josh and a beautiful love story begins. The story has many twist and turns that keep the reader engaged. It is primarily that the romance that keeps so many young readers entertained as this is the kind of relationship that can only be truly experienced when we are going. This is why the book has so many satisfied fans.

'Everything, Everything'

This emotional book tells the tale of Maddy, a teenage girl shut off from the world because of a rare disease that means she is susceptible to many illnesses. When new guy Olly moves in across the street, she finds herself developing feelings for him. The only problem is, she has little way of communicating with him. However, a chance encounter one night leads Olly on a mission to reach Maddy, whatever it takes. This story captures the frustration of first crushes as well as the essence of young love. This is what makes this book so appealing to younger readers.

'The Duff'

This story is all about Bianca, a teenage girl muddling her way through high school. Imagine her shock when she discovers she has been termed the "Duff" of her friendship group—the Designated Ugly Fat Friend. Upon this realisation, she does what she can to break down the barriers and improve her image with the help of her neighbour, Wesley. This book explores the struggles and stereotypes of high school which is something that every young person can relate to.
