A Whole New World: Fan-Favorite Not Returning To Jurassic World 2!
"Sequels, er, find a way," and the hype train is far from extinct for the continuing Jurassic Park franchise.
"Sequels, er, find a way," and the hype train is far from extinct for the continuing #JurassicPark franchise. High heels, Star-Lord, and feathered raptors will all be back for 2018's fifth installment, but unfortunately New Girl's Jake Johnson will not be returning.
Lowery Cruthers (best name ever) first appeared in #JurassicWorld to take the majority of the film's chuckles, and was the original, not to mention biggest, JP fan — he quite literally had the T-shirt. However, Johnson announced on Twitter that he will not be back for the Jurassic World sequel, tentatively titled "Ancient Features."
Hatching a new story.
While the plot of the dino-sequel may be top secret, we are told to expect a completely different romp around the park, and that there will be a "darker" tone to the film. Perhaps that is why Cruthers's wisecracks won't be called back for J.A. Bayona's directorial debut for the franchise? The whole returning to the scene of the crime story has been done, so expect us to be moving beyond the confines of the Isla islands to bigger and better things.
Jurassic World's director Colin Trevorrow has stepped out of the director's chair, but will be penning the script, joined by archeology alumni Steven Spielberg, as an Executive Director. Thankfully the rumors of weaponized dinosaurs with "frickin" lasers on their heads have been confined to the mind of an Austin Powers film — but Trevorrow said elements of that plot will probably be picked up in Ancient Features.
Continuing The Trilogy
Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt may be back, but Johnson's loss is one that will be felt for the team. He took up the geeky tech guy role as a more likable version of Wayne Knight's Dennis Nedry from the original. Cruthers also offered the comic relief while Pratt was off Indiana Jones-ing Dallas Howard. However, if we really are going off map, then there would be no need for Johnson to return. There are plans for three "new" films following the maligned Jurassic Park III in 2001, but so far there are only nods to the original films, and no full-blown cameos. Things are off to a great start, as Jurassic World went on to net $1.6 billion at the box office, and be the fourth highest-grossing film of all time!
Who knows though — thankfully Lowery escaped without becoming rex chow, which is a rarity for characters of the franchise, and if the films really do spin out for a second trilogy he could return in JW3: The Search For Goldblum. Sure, Cruthers may be gone, but we are still holding out for the return of the elusive Dr. Ian Malcolm at some point — I'll get the baby oil ready!
