'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' — Like an Evening Full of Mixed Emotions In a Great Italian Restaurant

Since I didn't get around to see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in cinema, I was left as a curious onlooker to the storm of mixed reactions and fairly heated discussions that followed it. Now, after having finally seen the film, it is easy to understand this extremely mixed response. Whether you like or dislike this movie, it is a tricky one to sum up in a cohesive and conventional manner.

Therefore, in order to share my feelings I have towards this movie, it's perhaps better to do it from a bit more unconventional perspective - by comparing the experience of watching Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to an evening in an italian restaurant. Let's take a look at why watching this movie felt like eating a great pizza that could have been served better.

Build Up to the Movie — A Rushed Start to the Meal

So, I decided to visit this newly refurnished pizzeria called DC Extended Universe or DCEU. I was eager to try out their new pizza (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) that was supposed to be this awesome mix between dark olives (Batman) and red pepper (Superman) with plenty of other tasty ingredients thrown in as well.

However, I was a bit hesitant to order it, since I had my doubts on whether there were a bit too many ingredients for one pizza. Furthermore, even though the service in this restaurant was quick, I was not given a chance to soak up the atmosphere and there weren't that many appetizers (previous DCEU films) to choose from either. Instead, I was rather hastily given the main course. Having said that, it certainly looked great.

Watching the Movie — Like a Conflicted Dining Experience

As I started the meal, some positive aspects were clear right away. Most of the ingredients in it were indeed excellent and they certainly looked good. In fact, the aforementioned dark olives might have been some of the best I ever had. Generally, I really got the sense that a lot of effort had gone into making these ingredients as good as possible.

However, while great on their own, it also became clear that the dark olives and red pepper didn't compliment each other as well as I had hoped. Most likely it was a result of their taste being somewhat lost in the mix among all the other great ingredients. Furthermore, there was this strange seasoning (Lex Luthor), which, although interesting, did seem to be a bit too strong for the meal. At the very least, it was made for a more acquired taste.

There were some other issues as well. One of them being the dough (script). It really did not hold all of these ingredients together well enough. Although it was clearly made by using a great flour (interesting ideas and questions raised within the movie), it was also a bit undercooked. That, in turn, made the pizza rather difficult to eat comfortably. In fact, it actually took me a few hours to finish it.

Finally, my meal was interrupted by being offered some samples of these new ingredients that the restaurant is going to serve in the future. However, as good as they looked, I barely got a taste of them.

In the end, I had experienced some great tastes and had certainly gotten my money's worth in terms of the quantity of the meal. It's just that the experience in general should have been a bit more enjoyable.

Reasons to Look Forward

After I had finished the meal, I looked around to see the other customers who had ordered the same pizza as I had. Some, I noticed, were considerably more frustrated by the fact that they did not have a very pleasent and cohesive experience. Therefore, they probably considered it a waste of these otherwise good ingredients. Then there were others who didn't care about the lack of appetizers or a bit undercooked dough. Also, they didn't mind the excessive amount of ingredients that didn't always mesh with each other. Why should all of this matter when they taste so great? These customers clearly had a good time and are surely going to return for more.

While I was still on the fence about whether or not I want to revisit this place, I got a glimpse of the chef and the cooks in the kitchen (directors, script writers, producers etc.). They certainly looked competent and seemed to do their job with passion. However, they were also clearly working overtime in a rush to get this place going in it's newly refurnished form. Yet, they were still able to deliver this pizza full of these great ingredients in a more or less eatable manner. To me, that is an encouraging sign for the future.

Therefore, although I didn't leave any tip this time around, I most certainly want to return to DCEU. Furthermore, perhaps this place can indeed compete with the pizzeria across the street named Marvel Cinematic Universe. We'll see. In the meanwhile, I decided to have this fascinatingly crazy looking cake called Suicide Squad for dessert.
