Brownstein on Two Rainbows' Day

Logan Holmes has done his best to stay professional in his job. He has taught the seventh graders astronomy, and shared anecdotes as long as they're relevant to the class, so, to the students, the idea of him having a life outside of his classroom, or feelings at all, was absurd. However, there were a lot of emotions that he was familiar with: delight when he knows his teaching was actually impacting the students, concern when a student is clearly struggling, love for his husband, Patton Hart, who is also the art teacher, and annoyance for the new gym teacher, Helen Brownstein.

From what Logan heard, she got fired from her job as the hall monitor of an elementary school, and applied to be the gym teacher since she had experience with being a personal trainer. Every now and then, he passed the gym and heard remarks along the lines of "Keep running, you little shits!" or "You're having cramps? Too bad! I've been scooped clean!" and did everything in his power not to burst into the gym, and twist her body like a strand of RNA. Not only that, but from what Patton has told him, some of the students have made lewd drawings where Helen was the subject. As disturbed as Patton was, the drawings were technically within the criteria for the day's assignments, so he gave the students credit for the drawings. Logan couldn't see why Helen hadn't been fired yet, but as far as he knew, Principal Stokes wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt since she at least gets her job done.

One day, the bell for the third lunch rang, and it was lunch break for both Logan and Patton. There was a knock on Logan's door, and he opened it to see his happy husband with a container in his hand.

"A bright shining star was missing from the sky. It seems I've found him," Patton greeted.

Though Logan reminded Patton that the night sky wouldn't always look the same given the time of the year, he would be lying if he said he didn't find Patton's attempts of using astronomy to flirt adorable. Once the door closed behind them, they spent their time gossiping, eating, and kissing every chance they could since they knew their classes and work kept them from being with one another often, but the distance throughout the day reminded them how much they love each other.

Halfway through the lunch period, there was a voice on the intercom that said "What do you mean nothing can be done?!" and it took a while for Logan to recognize that it was Helen's voice. This was followed by what they assumed to be Principal Stokes's voice responding with "Simple. There's nothing that can be done."

"I knew those two were fags since the first time I saw them, and you're telling me they can get away with it?"

"Did they make advances on a student?"

"Well, no."

"Did they fornicate in an area where they would eventually get caught?"

"Um, no, but-"

"Then this is out of my hands, Helen. If Mr. Holmes and Mr. Hart aren't hurting anyone, or causing any form of assault, then what reason do you have for barging in here?"

Throughout the conversation, the couple realized that Helen must've seen them kiss, or do something else to make their love for each other evident, and tried to get them fired as a result. Logan wasn't that big on talking about his personal life outside of the anecdotes, and Patton respected his wishes, and avoided bringing up their marriage to his class. Neither of them knew how well the student body or the faculty would take it, so they didn't leave the room immediately.

Once the lunch period was over, Logan thought it would be a good idea to walk Patton to the art room, so that no one would see him as vulnerable. As they were walking, students and faculty that were walking and socializing stopped, and looked at them with expressions that even Patton couldn't easily read. When they had a few steps to go, the occupants of the hallway clapped behind them, and cheered as if they didn't some kind of traveling musical. The pair turned around and saw that the clapping and cheering were genuine. One of the students even came up to them and said "You have no idea how many people are relieved that you two are gay, and how many people ship you." There was also a student who shouted "We've got two gay teachers! Gays can work anywhere!" causing the cheering to happen more.

Logan kissed Patton before they rushed to their classrooms, and the day went on normally with the occasional need to confirm the gossip that he and Patton are together, and adding that they're married.

Eventually, Principal Stokes called them both into the office to check on their well-being, and confirmed that they were putting up an add for a new gym teacher.
