Character Details of Marvel's Inhumans Confirmed—Here Comes the Royal Family!

Marvel Studios may have passed on the idea of an Inhumans movie, but the iconic #Marvel property is still joining the #MCU. Due to air later this year, with the first two episodes released at #IMAX theaters before the full series breaks on ABC, the Inhumans TV series promises to be tremendously comic-book accurate. That said, fans have been locked in heated debate over the cast of the series, wondering if the show will simply focus on the classic Royal Family, if any members of the Royal Family will be omitted, or if Marvel would choose to add some of the newer characters into the mix? Now, thanks to The Hashtag Show, we have the answer - and, as we await casting information, it's sure to inspire some pretty cool fancasts!

The Hashtag Show claims to have acquired character breakdowns for the seven main characters. Although each character's identity is cloaked under a code-name, they're not hard to work out. Take a look at The Hashtag Show's breakdown in the video below, and then let's run through the characters and see what we can deduce about their roles in the series.

Black Bolt

Broderick: Male. 30-40. Caucasian. Can say volumes with just a look. Strong, thoughtful and private, he’s unaccustomed to being questioned or feeling a need to answer to anyone, to an extent that can verge on arrogance. Series regular.

In order to understand the #Inhumans, you have to get that they're essentially Game of Thrones in space. They're not governed by a democracy, they're ruled by a monarchy and many of the most entertaining arcs involve power-struggles like the kind you'd see in Westeros. Black Bolt is always at the heart of these because he is the power who sits on the throne.

This character description is a perfect summary of Black Bolt; an absolute monarch who verges on arrogance. I love the humor of this description, "Can say volumes with just a look." Black Bolt's power is in his voice. His slightest whisper can atomize mountains. In fact, it usually falls to his wife Medusa (more on her later) to interpret his will. They communicate both through a telepathic bond and through complex hand-gestures.

Medusa

Marjorie: Female. 30-40. Caucasian. An elegant and intelligent advisor to her husband, she struggles to find her place outside of their relationship, as others tend to view her as just a pretty face. Strong and resourceful, she’s not afraid to break the rules when the situation demands it. Series regular.

This is a clear description of Medusa, described by The Hastag Show as the 'Lady Macbeth' of the Inhumans. She spends most of her life in her husband's shadow, largely because his power requires her to be on hand in order to communicate his decisions. That said, she's easily one of the most willful Inhumans. In fact, over in the comics she's unseated her husband and taken the throne for herself.

Medusa has a long and complex pedigree in Marvel Comics, running all the way back to her origin as an enemy of the #FantasticFour. When this character profile says she's not afraid to break the rules, that's a bit of an understatement. You can expect marital discord to be a part of the story at some points.

Maximus

Marty: 30-40. Caucasian. Broderick’s younger brother; he is intelligent, charming, and articulate. He comes across as a man of the people but secretly covets power. Series regular.

Maximus the Mad is the great villain of the Inhuman Royal Family, a genius who seeks to usurp his brother's throne. The series is sure to feature one of Maximus's coups attempts, as he uses his wit and charm to persuade people to side with him. I can't help noticing that this character profile obscures the fact that he has the power to manipulate the minds of others. It's a subtle superpower, but we already saw in Jessica Jones just how dangerous that kind of power can be.

Karnak

Kevin: Male. 30-40. Open. Slight of build, his mind is his greatest asset. Always prepared with a plan, his outlook on life is the glass is always half-empty and often cracked and dirty as well. Though his outlook can be grim, he has a droll, dry sense of humor. Series regular.

A recent comic book series by Warren Ellis has once again drawn attention to Karnak, the deeply-philosophical Inhuman who you really don't want to underestimate. His power is a simple one. He can see the flaw in anything. Combine that with his prodigious martial arts mastery and you have a living weapon who can easily take on the mightiest of foes.

Karnak sits very well in a Game of Thrones format. He's an invaluable ally, but the fact he can't 'switch off' his power means that he's always aware of just how easily the things around him can be broken. That means he can immediately spot the flaw in any friendship, relationship, or even monarchy.

Gorgon

Grady: Male. 25-35. Open. Impetuous and brash, he has serious impulse control issues which frequently get him into trouble whether its women, booze, or fighting. He loves life and lives in the moment for better or worse. Series regular.

No one could mistake Gorgon, a physical powerhouse who, over in the comics, has matured into a mentor figure to the younger Inhumans. This is an older portrayal of the character, one that harks back to him as the slightly out-of-control warrior who tends to punch first and think later.

His feet take the form of hooves and he can stomp them to generate devastating tremors and quakes. You also really don't want to be kicked by him.

Crystal

Christine: Female. 18-25 to play 18. Caucasian. Soulful but still learning the ways of the world, she has the arrogance of youth. Impetuous and independent she is also deeply devoted to her family. Series regular.

One of the most beloved of the Inhumans, Crystal is a character with a rich history. In fact, in the comics she and #Quicksilver have a child, Luna. Again, the series is harking back to the classic design, with Crystal as a slightly impetuous youth who can't help but get involved in the world around her. She cares so much and that often gets her drawn into Maximus's plays for power as she's pretty easy to manipulate.

For all her youth, Crystal may well be one of the most powerful Inhumans. She wields absolute power over the elements earth, air, wind, and fire.

Triton

Timothy: Male. 25-35. Open. SFXMU required. Supremely athletic. The ultimate picture of cool. He’s calm under pressure and willing to do anything to get the job done.

Just the mention of SFXMU (Special Effects Make-Up) pegs this as Triton, and the description of his athletic prowess makes it a certainty. Triton is one of the most unusual Inhumans, as his body has mutated into an aquatic form. He can only live in a hydrated environment, and has to wear an environmental suit when out of the water.

Some Marvel fans had actually begun to speculate that Triton was in fact the mystery Inhuman being introduced in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4, but this character profile indicates we can rule that out. I'm delighted to see Triton alongside the other members of the Royal Family. He would have been an easy one to avoid. After all, these Inhumans seem to live on the Moon, and the aquatic idea is quite a fantastical one for that environment. Instead, Marvel has chosen to be absolutely comic-book-accurate!

All in all, these character profiles are tremendously promising. In using all the classic Inhumans, #Marvel has suggested that they're trying to launch a franchise that will be true to the original comic book versions. Every character has been taken back to their earliest form, giving Marvel Television a lot of room for character growth. This is definitely a step in the right direction, and leaves the newer Inhumans for other shows, like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. (Check out that show's explanation of the Inhumans in the below video.)
