Jackman's last outing as Wolverine has been said to bring a close to Wolverine's story, and many fans have therefore presumed the finale will feature Wolverine's death.

However, this hasn't been confirmed, so let's take a look at the reasons why Logan might survive Hugh Jackman's final outing as the Wolverine.

Will Wolverine Die in Logan?

There is some evidence to support claims of Wolverine dying, considering his weakened state and the insurmountable odds he's up against in Logan. With Wolverine's healing factor diminished after The Wolverine when Silver Samurai drained some of Wolverine's healing ability, Wolverine has begun to age like a normal person.

Now that Wolverine is somewhat mortal, his body can no longer handle the stress of constant hand-to-hand fights. Wolverine may be used to fighting but he's not prepared for combat that could potentially end his life. In his prime, Wolverine was able to run into a fight, swinging his claws in a rage. That no longer appears to be the case.

With His Healing Ability Diminished, Wolverine is Susceptible to Dying, But He May Survive Anyway

To sum it up, if Wolverine gets seriously injured during the events of Logan, his story is likely to end right there and then. However, even without his mutant ability keeping him alive, Logan may still survive.

There's not a lot to go off of but a few screenshots in the trailers for Logan have glimpsed Wolverine in what appears to be a hospital bed. Only Wolverine's head can be seen from the angle of the camera but the objects surrounding Wolverine potentially reveal his location.

As you can see in the image, there are two gray colored wires resting next to Wolverine's head. The wires could be anything but considering how they share a close similarities to hospital wires used to monitor heartbeats, it's possible Wolverine is in a hospital.

There's also potential for this image of Wolverine resting in a hospital to have been misinterpreted. The image may be of Wolverine as he's being taken captive by Donald Pierce.

Could Wolverine Manage to Survive His Ordeal in Logan?

Pierce's mission in Logan is to acquire X23 but if the opportunity to capture #Wolverine came up, Pierce would probably take advantage of it which could lead to Wolverine being taken back to Xander Rice's laboratory to be experimented on. In which case, that would provide some context to this image of Wolverine in a hospital bed since he'd likely be placed in a bed that resembles a hospital bed were he to be experimented on by Xander Rice.

Although, in another potential scenario, Wolverine may survive his ordeal in Logan and the presumed image of Wolverine in a hospital bed could be the closing sequence of the movie where Wolverine wakes up to find he's still alive.

Will Wolverine Become a Mentor to X-23 After Logan?

If that's to be, Wolverine's story could continue on as a guide for X-23. Wolverine may not be able to fight alongside X-23 any more but he'd still be able to provide her with the guidance she'll need seeing as how no other mutants are around to guide X-23 through life. That being said, the aspect of Wolverine dying leaves a particular subject unaddressed, what will happen to X-23 if / when Wolverine dies?

Wolverine is probably going to die in Logan so we need to acknowledge that fact and with Wolverine's potential death taking place, X-23 will be left on her own. Charles Xavier and Caliban are the only other characters who would be able to take care of X-23 in case of Wolverine's death but it appears as if they'll meet their end in Logan as well.

Who Will Take X-23 in if Wolverine Dies?

So, accounting for Wolverine potentially dying alongside Xavier and Caliban, someone will need to step up to care for X-23. X-23 is a clawed mutant who not many people can hurt but she still needs people to care for her, she is a child regardless of her mutant nature which draws into question who would take X-23 in or who would Wolverine send her to?

It's fair to assume most or the entire mutant race has become extinct so Wolverine probably doesn't have too many friends that are still living. Wolverine might have some human friends that he could call on but no human would be equipped to care for a mutant child like X-23. She needs a mutant mentor who can teach her when it's acceptable to use her abilities and when she needs to restrain herself, regardless of how she feels. More to the point, X-23's need for a mentor beyond the events of Logan might see Wolverine survive to fill that capacity.

In the scenario of Wolverine surviving the events of Logan, his role in the X-Men Cinematic Universe could change dramatically from the savage fighter he once was to a support character similar to who Charles Xavier was. That scenario would also work out for the actor who plays Wolverine, Hugh Jackman.

Jackman's Future as Wolverine Appears to be Coming to a Close

Jackman has gone on to state his enthusiasm for the role but the massive dedication and sacrifice Jackman has to make to be physically fit for the role of Wolverine is something he can no longer continue doing . But, were Jackman's version of Wolverine restricted to a wheel-chair or a role where he's solely sitting, Jackman might be enticed to return to the role of Wolverine.

Regardless, Wolverine's fate is still up in the air. Until we witness the events of Logan, we won't know if there's any possibility of Hugh Jackman returning to play Wolverine. Although, Wolverine's death doesn't have to be permanent in the X-Men Cinematic Universe either way.

If Hugh Jackman decides later on that he wants another part in an X-Men movie and comes to an agreement with 20th Century Fox, the events of Logan could be retconned to see Hugh Jackman join another branch of the X-Men Cinematic Universe. Fox has several growing X-Men universes in development, any of which could see Hugh Jackman return to reprise his role as the Wolverine, even if it's only for a brief cameo.

For now, let's just wait and see what happens with Logan because Wolverine's fate in the X-Men Cinematic Universe is dependent on what takes place in Logan. If Wolverine is alive after Logan, then we can begin to throw out theories on when / how he can return to the X-Men Cinematic Universe - in a believable capacity that is.
