Deadliest Movie Sharks

You either love sharks or they scare the crap out of you. But if you’re like me, sharks both scare and intrigue you. Like me, many people are fascinated not only by a shark’s beauty, but also by the badassery predator instincts they have. In celebration of this year’s shark movie The Shallows, where our worst nightmares come alive of getting stranded on a rock in the middle of an shark waters are told by actress Blake Lively, we are honoring the best ‘sharkplotation’ movies of all time. The following movies will either make you never want to go in the water again or make you laugh your ass off due to the sheer plot absurdity. From the classic shark movies to the most outlandish like shark ghosts to the campiest sharks attacking from the sky, there is no place safe from any shark attack. Seriously in the end, don’t we all eventually get eaten by sharks?

Sharknado

This insanely popular shark movie franchise starring Tara Reid, Ian Ziering, and John Heard is the quintessential mix of camp and absolute absurdity. The basic plot of Sharknado is basically the craziest, not-ever possible thing you ever heard of: a freak waterspout (water tornado) picked up sharks out of the ocean and dropped them into the flooded streets of Los Angeles where they attack unassuming people. Enough said. The franchise has went on to have further success with three sequels, Sharknado 2: The Second One, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! and Sharknado: The 4th Awakens. Instant classic, right?

Jaws

You can’t start any shark movie list without mentioning the classic 1975 Steven Spielberg movie Jaws starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. If you haven’t heard of this legendary shark movie, you probably grew up on a deserted island with no cable. If you haven’t seen it, here is the basic idea of the movie: a gigantic great white shark suddenly menaces the small island community of Amity, a police chief, a marine biologist and a grizzly fisherman set out to stop it. The movie spawned three sequels–Jaws 2, Jaws 3, and Jaws: The Revenge–though none of which approached the success of the original Jaws.

Deep Blue Sea

In the ever so realistic movie Deep Blue Sea starring Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows and Samuel L. Jackson, a team of scientists set out on a floating isolated research facility using genetically manipulated intelligent sharks to find the cure to Alzheimer's disease. Somehow the test subjects turn on the scientists and all hell sets loose. It’s a big, loud, dumb action movie with sharks that doesn't try to pretend to be anything else.

Open Water

Many people’s worst fear is getting stranded floating in open water with the possibility of getting eaten by sharks. In the 2003 movie, your nightmares are answered in the live-action reality tv-esque Open Water. It starts out like anyone vacationing in the Caribbean like scuba diving and enjoying the wonders of the sea, but not in this movie. Just their luck, they get forgotten by the team of people they were with and are then left behind, floating in the endless sea. Typically, they eventually get eaten by a group of sharks in a feeding frenzy only after a long and drawn out tease by the creatures of the deep. The end.

Ghost Shark

If you like sharks and are a fan of the paranormal you’ll love this movie. If Deep Blue Sea and Ghost had a baby you’d get Ghost Shark. In the 2013 movie, a couple of rednecks on a fishing trip kills a great white shark. After the shark’s death, its spirit comes back for its revenge. The angry shark spirit begins to terrorizes the small town of Smallport in order to get back at its killers and anyone else that stands in its way. If Ghost Shark can tell us anything, don’t piss off sharks and then kill them because they will come back to get their revenge on you.

Sand Sharks

Since we’re on the topic of sharks being able to haunt your dreams, the next logical move for sharks would be to stalk you on land. In the ever so campy Sand Sharks, an underwater earthquake cracks open a crater deep beneath the ocean's surface unleashing a prehistoric shark. On the sleepy island of White Sands, local teens drink and party beside a beach bonfire while a shark who can swim in sand terrorizes a tropical paradise. Totally realistic and plausible if the next step for the evolution of sharks is to swim through sand. Nowhere is safe anymore.

Sharktopus

When Godzilla meets The Island of Doctor Moreau you travel to the land where nightmares are truly made. In the 2012 instant classic Sharktopus, a half-shark, half-octopus creature created for the military reigns terror in Mexico while its creator tries to capture it. All while its reign of terror is happening, a wolf and whale mix (whalewolf) is trying to gain power over the Sharktopus’ turf and steal it. You can guess the rest if you know how Godzilla went down.

Shark Night 3D 

If you liked Final Destination but you always thought to yourself, “I wish it had more sharks…” well you’re in luck because Shark Night 3D is the answer to all your wishes. In the 2011 movie a weekend at the lake turns into a nightmare for seven vacationers as they are subjected to shark attacks until teens are picked off one by one. Also to feed your fears of being eaten alive by a shark a bit more, it's in 3D!

The Last Shark

This movie is basically the poor man’s low-budget version of Jaws. The Last Shark or aka Great White, is an instant classic because it’s so epically bad. In the typical shark movie storyline, an enormous and angry 35 foot great white shark takes revenge on humans on a coastal town. After several shark attacks, and the Mayor does nothing to stop it, two men set sail in pursuit to stop the shark. Unsurprisingly, the movie was successfully sued by Universal Pictures for basically making the same movie in 1982 for an undisclosed sum of money. If you love campy and silly B movie grade films, The Last Shark is for you.
