Epic 'Game Of Thrones' Theory Points To Jon Snow's Very Own 'Star Wars' Backstory!

It appears you can't go anywhere in Game of Thrones without bumping into someone you know. There may be Seven Kingdoms, but even that doesn't guarantee you won't be brothel-kidnapped by Jorah Mormont, or running straight into the Hound. In a web of families and dynasties (even incest), someone is always going to be related to someone, with the long mooted R + L = J being proof. The Season 6 finale will undoubtedly bring consequences in the next season as Jon Snow discovers his Targaryen heritage, but enough about him! This season once again picked up the story of Jon's half-brother/cousin Bran Stark, who ultimately discovered Jon's secret lineage through his time travel-visions. Whilst Bran may no longer be as closely related to Jon Snow as we first thought, could the newly anointed King in the North be related to someone else in Camp Bran?

Meera 'Sled Girl' Reed! Thanks to redditor MikeTysonsLifeCoach for boiling this one down! We had joked that with their floppy black curls, Jon Snow and Meera Reed could be related, but with R + L = J confirmed, the probability of these two actually being siblings just significantly increased. Are Jon and Meera the show's very own Luke and Leia, with Lyanna Stark serving as an ill-fated Padmé ?

A New Hope

So, let's break it down! The only other man who survived a pretty disastrous mission to the Tower of Joy was Howland Reed; seen in flashback, Reed is the father of Jojen (R.I.P.) and Meera (currently Bran-sitting). Whilst only mentioned in passing, we do know that a grown up version of flashback Reed still exists somewhere in Thronesland. A Clash of Kings mentions that Howland and Ned were great friends, but in all those years, the Reeds never visited Winterfell. Meera was the right age for marriage, but was never offered to marry into the great Northern name via Robb Stark.

Jon and Meera are listed as being born in 283 AC...the same year Lyanna died! In this world, Howland Reed would serve as a Bail Organa, whisking the mystery child off to Alderaan. This would explain why Howland exists in George R.R. Martin's world, but has never been at the forefront, and why it would make sense for Ned and Howland to keep their distance. Similar to the plot of Revenge of the Sith, both baby Targaryens would be kept safe from Lannisters, Baratheons and Mountains. Alfie Allen even told Vulture that on Kit Harington's return to the show, he quizzed him on Jon's parentage:

You know, I asked him about who Jon Snow's real parents were, and he told me. I can't say who, but I can tell you that it involves a bit of a Luke Skywalker situation.

Sure, we only saw one baby, but if cinema has taught us anything, just because you don't see it happen, doesn't mean it didn't. For three films we wandered the universe thinking that Luke was the solitary Skywalker child, and look how that turned out!

Benjen in the Wind

So, who plays Obi Wan in this saga of snow? Uncle Benjen! The reappearance of 'Uncle' Benjen Stark coincided nicely with Bran and Meera's escape from wights in "The Door". In an all-too-quick cameo, as Joseph Mawle waved goodbye to Bran and Meera at the end of the season, no one was convinced that we wouldn't be seeing 'Coldhands' again. Benjen's eyes glance over the two and he says "I wish you both good fortune" with a sly smile. As Ned and Benjen were so close, you could probably expect Ned to have shared the secret with his brother, pre-emepting his early departure. Benjen was never far away and always in the loop, just like a cave-dwelling Alec Guinness.

Clearly Jon is crucial in the war agains the White Walkers, whilst some go as far as saying that Benjen is the show's most important character. After spending some time with the Children of the Forest, ol' Uncy Benj is privy to as much information as the Three Eyed Raven. As Benjen saved Bran and Meera from certain death, what if it was Meera he was protecting instead of Bran? Meera is clearly a clever girl, but is she that important to the overall story? Digital Spy even put the theory to Ellie Kendrick, asking whether she thought the two could be related:

Hey, I'd love it to be true because it would mean great things for my character, but I'm holding back on speculation for now. I think what's been going on in George RR Martin's brain is so much more a complex wormhole than we could possibly imagine. I think there's definitely a mystery to Meera and Jojen and their parentage, but I think it'll unwind itself eventually.

We aren't convinced that the cast know nothing, but Kendrick isn't exactly dispelling the rumour!

The dragon has three heads.

If you still aren't convinced that the Meera theory can't play out, there is pretty convincing evidence that somewhere in Westeros there is a third Targaryen bouncing around. As Daenerys entered the House of the Undying, she heard the prophecy "The Dragon Has Three Heads". You only have to look at the house sigil to see three headed dragon - Daenerys, Jon and [INSERT NAME HERE]. Up until now, many had speculated that the third Targaryen could be little Tyrion Lannister, but I call b***s**t on that one - way too obvious Georgie Boy. The young Lannister lion who never fitted the mould, and the young Stark boy who never fitted the mould are two backstories that are just too close.

So, where does this leave us? George R.R. Martin has already revealed that a third WTF moment from his books is being saved for the final two seasons - the first being Lady Shireen's bonfire, and the second Hodor's demise. If Cersei blowing up King's Landing, or Jon being Targaryen aren't big enough, then the showrunners must have something spectacular up their HBO sleeves! Let's hope this is a case of saving the best til last. It is a bit of a long shot, but surely something other than sled-dog is meant for Meera. That being said, they did queue Hodor up for six seasons just to hold a door shut. Maybe Jon and Meera just go to the same hairdressers?!
