'Four Weddings and a Funeral'

The Show we all need

Inspired by the 1994 movie starring Hugh Grant Four Weddings and a Funeral is a new dramedy on Hulu created by Mindy Kaling. The show is centered around a group of diverse friends who come together for a London wedding much like in the movie. The show takes place in London and in the last few weeks premiered their first three episodes. At first I wasn't attracted to the show, and I just categorized it as just another Hulu original to scroll past, but then I clicked it, and now I'm waiting for the next episode. To real the audience in the pilot starts off like the movie, with Maya (played by Nathalie Emmanuel,) waking up in distress and leaving her married boyfriend and boss's apartment in a soaking wet bra. After seeing that you have no choice, but to watch the whole episode.

Starring in the show is Nathalie Emmanuel as Maya, Rebecca Rittenhouse as Ainsley Howard, Brandon Mychal Smith as Craig, John Reynolds as Duffy, and Zoey Boyle as Gemma. I think this is a great and diverse cast and I'm happy to be introduced to these faces. The characters are all very elaborate and complex adults who kind of act like teenagers in the sense that they still need to work on themselves. My favorite character has to be Duffy because he is an aspiring author and recently completed a novel with thousands of pages. I can relate to this myself because when I wrote my first draft for my first book and it was way too many words. I also like Duffy because he to me is the real connection between the show and the movie, because he reminds me of Hugh Grant's character Charles. He is also sort of the nerd in the group and is battling trying to tell his longtime crush he's in love with her.

Between the jokes and overall set up of the show it defiantly reflects Mindy Kailing. On the show there are the same style of witty lines as the ones on Mindy's old hulu original The Mindy Project. After all that was mainly the reason I started watching this show because of Mindy being a creator on the project. The show has this self deprecating style of humor that Mindy is really good at. None of the characters have perfect lives, and if they do that will change in a matter of 20 minutes.

My one critique on the show which isn't that big is Maya and her hair. The way her hair is styled in the episodes it's obvious there isn't a black women doing her hair or someone familiar with hair like hers. This may not be a big deal to most, but as a young black girl I find it important especially when the other characters hair are clearly done well. If you're going to represent someone you should do it properly. If Maya is just waking up that's one thing, but when she's going to a wedding she looks quite informal with a chunk of her edges sticking out. At one point in the show her hair actually changes from a ponytail to a bun, and it's made to seem like nothing happened.

In closing, this show has a great mixture of dramatic moments, and funny lines. Ir reminds me of a lighter version of ParentHood to some extent. The show also has amazing establishing shots of London and New York, and as someone who wants to be in film great establishing shots are how you steal my heart. I definitely would recommend this show to anyone who wants to watch something new, and it is rated TV-MA, but it honestly isn't that bad putting aside the cuss words.
