Go and Watch 'The Meg'

It's pretty great.

This is spoiler-free. I wouldn't dare spoil something this good.

If you're into creature feature movies, and you loved Jaws, then I highly recommend you go and see The Meg. It's like Jaws on steroids.

The movie is about this marine life research team that discovers that the Mariana Trench isn't the deepest part of the ocean, and they are able to dive down past it. This is where they find the "Meg." This whole part of the film is really great, visually. It kinda makes you feel like you're under the water with them. If you're someone who likes to watch the fish episodes of Planet Earth, then I know you'll love this part.

The megalodon itself in the film is an amazing sight to see. I mean, you can still tell it's CGI, but they made it look pretty real for a fake shark. He would defiantly give ol' Bruce from Jaws a run for his money. I got goosebumps every time he came on the screen. At times, it looked lifelike. And, unlike Jaws, you see more of the Meg in this movie. I know that the reason for the shark being scary in Jaws is because you barely see it. The scares work the same with the Meg even if you see him more often.

I remember when I first saw the trailer; I watched it with my sister, and when it got to the part when it showed the little girl in the underwater facility and the Meg slowly come into frame in front of her, I looked to my sister and said, "This is gonna be good when this scene alone gives me anxiety." (And I was right.) I also remember thinking, If I was in that kid's shoes, I would've probably peed myself out of fear.

The jump scares are pretty well done, too, way better scares than that dumb Slender Man movie I talked about in my last post. The woman sitting next to me in the theater was jumping so hard that I was expecting her just to fun out of the theater.

I really love creature features like this, especially if it's ocean-based. In my opinion, horror movies that take place either on or in the water, it just makes it that much scarier. You don't know what is lurking down there and anything could grab you and pull you down before you could even blink. Big bodies of water have freaked me out so much in my life that I won't go in a lake or whatever if I can't see my feet. Pools are fine. But, then again, every kid had that irrational fear of there being a shark or a monster in the deep end.

I really love this movie, mostly because it's the first scary movie I've seen in a long time that truly scared me. I've seen a bunch of horror in my time, and I think I've become a bit jaded when it comes to horror, and I haven't seen anything that would've remotely freaked me out. True, I've seen things that are creepy, but I haven't been really scared, and films that take place underwater unlocks that deep fear of the unknown of the ocean in myself.

Anyway, I still really recommend this to my fellow horror lovers. The movie is nicely acted, the cast is great and really work well off one another; it is action-packed, funny, and, of course, doesn't fall short on the gore. I mean, with a bigger-than-life shark being the main focus, you would need all the gore you can get.
