Influential 'X-Men' Writer Chris Claremont Reveals What He Thinks of 'Logan'

When it comes to everything related to the #XMen, 66-year-old Chris Claremont knows his mutant stuff. Considered to be the most influential X-Men author of all time, Claremont's career spans decades and the writer is most-notably known for his work on The Uncanny X-Men series from 1975-1991. He's crediting with turning around the once-underachieving comic series and transforming it into one of Marvel's most popular titles.

He also co-created some of the most noteworthy X-Men characters including Rogue, Mystique, Phoenix and #Gambit. He has also crafted a numerous array of their most famous tales including “Days of Future Past,” “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” and “Legion.”

When it comes to the character of #Wolverine, Claremont and his famous long-time collaborator, artist-writer John Byrne, are responsible for developing his character into the fan-favorite superhero he is today.

While speaking with Vulture, Claremont recently expressed what he enjoyed about watching this incarnation of Logan on the big screen and whether he cried by the end of it.

"What I love about Hugh Jackman is he just brings all the elements of my vision of Logan... The pain, the nobility, the duality of his existence."

Claremont mentions loving Hugh Jackman's farewell portrayal of the character because of all the internal elements the character possesses, including his struggle with striving to be more like X-Men founder and leader, #CharlesXavier.

"What I love about Hugh Jackman is he just brings all the elements of my vision of Logan... The pain, the nobility, the duality of his existence."

That "duality" he mentions refers to Logan's relationship with Professor X, portrayed by the incomparable #SirPatrickStewart. Claremont also describes the appreciation Logan feels for Xavier and what his birth name means to him:

"Logan wants to be more like Charles. He wants to be a man, but there’s the animal in him. In a way, James Howlett” — Wolverine’s birth name, which is used throughout the film — “is a superhero costume. For him, the superhero costume means being a normal person, pretending to be a normal person.”

Of course, the question on everyone's mind is whether or not he busted into a ball of emotion as many others in the audience - myself included - have as they watched the film. After apparently giving an are-you-kidding-me look, Claremont simply stated:

"No... But that may have been because I was desperately trying not to embarrass myself by having to get to the bathroom.”

His Thoughts On The Inclusion Of Caliban And Rictor

Claremont co-created two characters from the comics who also appear in the film, the mutant-tracking #Caliban and the Earth-moving #Rictor. Although he always envisioned a New York accent for Caliban rather than Stephen Merchant's British one, he was pleased with the final outcome for the character. He was less impressed, however, with the depiction of Rictor, who appears only a handful of times throughout the film. Nevertheless, he claimed those brief moments were “more interesting than a lot of his appearances” in the comics that followed Claremont’s departure.

Claremont isn't the only #Marvel creator who has been praising Logan alongside critics and fans. A number of other well-known comic writers and artists have weighed in as well, all giving high marks for Hugh Jackman's swan song as the mutant superhero.

Taylor is currently the writer for the All-New Wolverine comics which focus on X-23/Laura succeeding Logan to become the new #Wolverine in the series, complete with a new costume resembling the original Wolverine's.

Mark Millar Of Kick Ass And Old Man Logan Fame Posts The Latest Box Office News

The co-creator of the #KickAss comics and author of the first volume of Old Man Logan tweeted his excitement for the opening weekend numbers exceeding expectations:
