While 2016 has been a difficult year for the DC Extended Universe, over on the small screen, #DCTV is flourishing. Nowhere is that more true than Supergirl, where Melissa Benoist's epic character is trying to tear through the web of prejudice and deceit surrounding Project Cadmus. Solicits for Episode 7 of Season 2, "The Darkest Places", had already revealed that Cadmus is responsible for creating a whole new character: the Cyborg Superman. Now, in the latest trailer, we finally got a look...

Supergirl's world is getting darker by the minute, with the Guardian hunted by the police as a vigilante and Mon-El a prisoner of Cadmus. Supergirl is forced to break into Cadmus to rescue Mon-El — but as you can see, she falls foul of a deadly new foe.

Yes, it looks to be official; David Harewood is playing the original Hank Henshaw, a.k.a. the Cyborg Superman! It seems J'onn J'onzz was wrong to believe Henshaw dead. Instead, he was rescued and revived as an agent of Cadmus. I'm guessing there's a reason he's been unveiled after Mon-El's capture, too; that Cadmus find a way to transfer Mon-El's Kryptonian powers to Hank, truly turning him into a Cyborg Superman.

Hank Henshaw is a terrifying threat for Supergirl and her friends. After all, he's already going to know a lot of the D.E.O.'s oldest secrets, and probably has some real political influence. Worse still, the world at large — and even the majority of the D.E.O. — don't know that he was replaced by J'onn J'onzz. When your typical D.E.O. agent sees the Cyborg Superman, they'll see their boss.

This dovetails perfectly with the themes of fear and prejudice that Supergirl is dealing with. Although the President and some of the Government's senior figures know about J'onn J'onzz, Henshaw can bring the Martian Manhunter out into the open. I seriously doubt that J'onn J'onzz will be able to stay in hiding much longer.

It's worth remembering, though, that Hank Henshaw is a threat beyond anything we've seen in Supergirl so far. Over in the #comics, he briefly replaced Superman himself, and literally destroyed an entire city during the "Reign of the Supermen" arc. He's actually one of the most notable Superman villains, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Lex Luthor and Darkseid!

Supergirl has rewritten Hank Henshaw's origin, but I can't help suspecting he's only become more dangerous, if anything. This new version of the Cyborg Superman has the potential to mess with Supergirl's life in a terrifyingly personal way, exposing one of her best friends for all the world to see. If my suspicions are right, he combines major combat training with Kryptonian strength and stamina, and we haven't even seen a hint of what those cybernetics will be able to do. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Cyborg Superman is beyond even Cadmus's ability to contain and control.

One thing's for sure, DC fans; Episode 7 of Supergirl Season 2 is a must-see. I suspect that Supergirl's world is about to be shaken to its very foundations by one of Superman's most powerful foes. The show truly is about to head into "The Darkest Places"...
