Justice League Review

Now, I've not been the biggest fan of the previous DC Movies, Man of Steel was a dull affair, Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice was mildly entertaining but riddled with plot choices that made no sense (Why did you say that name?!), Suicide Squad was just terrible due to many editing and story choices, despite its great casting, but Wonder Woman was a masterpiece, a shining hope for this universe. So what about Justice League? Well, long story short, I really really liked it.

I have given myself a few days to mull things over and collect my thoughts but I can officially say that Justice League is my second favourite DC Cinematic Universe movie.

I'll start with the bad, just to get it out of the way. It's been no secret that the film has been riddled with re-shoots since Zack Snyder left due to the tragic death of his daughter, and Joss Whedon finished the project. And some of these scenes are obvious. Some bad green screen and some dodgy moustache-removing CGI makes the re-shoots very difficult to miss, but does that harm the film? Not too much.

Another issue with the film is some of the CGI, excluding the moustache-removing effects. Some of the effects used on Cyborg (Ray Fisher) are obviously computer generated and could really take you out of the film...granted, I'm sure it's really difficult to make a character that leans heavily on CGI but if it's not going to work then either change the characters design or use practical effects.

Other than some CGI, the film is a solid entry to the DCCU, yes it has generic plot, yes it has a generic villain, but who's really going to this film looking for a good villain? We all want to see the Justice League in action, and boy do we get it.

Some of the best moments in this film come from the interactions between the main characters. Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince's (Gal Gadot) interactions offer something more meaningful and emotional where as Batman and Aquaman's (Jason Momoa) interactions are more banter-filled and lighthearted.

Not only that but this film, at least to me, finally gets Superman (Henry Cavill) right. Now, if you're going into this film not expecting to see Superman again you're being very naive and if that was a spoiler for you then I'm sorry but c'mon, he's now in the posters so it's your own fault. But this film finally gives us the Superman that fans have wanted. This Superman has charm, charisma and a nice bright red and blue suit. The perfect Superman.

The introduction of Cyborg, Flash and Aquaman are also nice moments but the stand-out is, by far, Ezra Miller's Flash. He adds a good sense of humour that the film might have been missing if it wasn't for him. He serves as the access point for fans, being an inexperienced hero amongst the giants of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. The hints towards the Flash's stand-alone outing (thought to be Flashpoint) set up what could be a great movie, if DC continues this upward curve.

Overall, if you liked Wonder Woman, you're likely to like Justice League. However if you're a Zack Snyder purist this might not be the film for you. I did really enjoy this film, and I'd go and see it again (and buy the Steelbook) I can't recommend it enough.
