For fans of the XMen and more specifically, Wolverine, you probably already witnessed Wolverine take his last stand in Logan. The movie is one of the best performing X-Men movies in both the domestic and international box office. Performance of the movie in the box office is also evidence towards Logan arguably being the best X-Men movie to date, and it only featured a handful of known characters affiliated with the X-Men in Marvel comics.

Nod To Deadpool 2 is Best Easter Egg in Logan

Apart from the small number of X-Men affiliated characters, quite a few Easter Eggs and references made to Marvel comics were sprinkled throughout the movie. Of course, the best Easter Egg in Logan was the pre-credits scene featuring Deadpool.

Deadpool wasn't in Logan as both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman made so eloquently apparent while promoting the movie but Ryan Reynolds a.k.a. Deadpool did cameo in a pre-credits sequence outside of the X-Men universe - breaking the 4th wall yet again. In case you're wondering what breaking the 4th wall means, it's simply any example of Deadpool stepping out of his universe to deliver a monologue to the audience; Deadpool exhibits this feat several times throughout his feature film, Deadpool.

Smallest Easter Egg in Logan Didn't Make it Completion

Moving past the obvious nod to Deadpool and his upcoming movie, Deadpool 2, there was one Easter Egg in Logan that not a lot of fans picked up on, which had to do with Wolverine's iconic cigar smoking.

The Easter Egg in question had already been glimpsed in the trailer for Logan but it wasn't until the movie premiered, that the scene held any significance. The scene to which I'm referring to depicts Laura Howlett / X-23 helping herself to some snacks in a convenience store.

In the aforementioned scene, Laura gets caught by the clerk who pushes Laura into a compromising position. Feeling threatened, Laura attacks the convenience clerk. The unassuming clerk is fortunate that Wolverine stopped Laura before she put her claws through his face.

After stopping Laura, Wolverine takes her back to their car. But before he leaves, Wolverine picks up a few things on his way out. One of the things Wolverine needs is a phone charger but the other item is either the biggest or smallest Easter Egg in the entire movie. Most people didn't notice Wolverine picked up a phone charger and then proceeded to grab a handful of cheap cigars.

The scene is of importance because it's a callback to Wolverine's past as a smoker. In the comics, Wolverine smoked cigars heavily. For a time, smoking was accepted but at one point, Marvel phased out Wolverine's smoking habits and Wolverine has been less of a smoker and more of a drinker - which doesn't seem like much of a difference to me.

As for how Wolverine's penchant for smoking cigars in the comics relates to the cinematic version has to do with Jackman's cigar smoking being a signature characteristic of Wolverine since he first appeared on-screen in X-Men 1.

Back in 2000 when X-Men 1 premiered, Wolverine's first encounter with Rogue was sitting at a bar, with a cigar hanging out of his mouth. Since then, he's been seen with a cigar in his mouth more often than not. Even Wolverine's brief cameo in X-Men: First Class featured him puffing on a cigar as well. Regardless, Wolverine's taste for cigars has been quite apparent but if it hasn't, let's recap all the times Wolverine smoked a fat one on-screen.

X-Men 1

Back in X-Men 1, Wolverine's first scene with Rogue (Anna Paquin) takes place in a Canadian Bar. Wolverine is approached by two gentlemen who had issue with how Wolverine won his cage fight. We all know how that confrontation ended but Wolvie was forced to put down his cigar.

Another instance of Wolverine being forced to put down his cigar came in X-Men 2. When Wolverine returned to the X-Mansion, he accompanied Charles Xavier into the Cerebro chamber. Charles then persuaded Wolverine to ash out his cigar before turning Cerebro on.

X-Men 3: The Last Stand

The opening sequence of the movie begins with what looks to be a apocalyptic future but it's merely a training sequence inside the Danger Room of the X-Mansion. More importantly, Wolverine can't pull himself away from smoking a cigar even while he's teaching a class to the young mutants. He does end up dropping the cigar when Storm pulls him away from an object flying at them.

X-Men Origins: The Wolverine

Right out the gate, the introduction which featured a montage of Wolverine's experiences in wars of the past sees him smoking a cigar. It was an interesting placement of Wolverine seeing as how he smoked a cigar in a memorable point in history.

The experience in question was of Wolverine as he sat aboard a ship on its way to Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944. Most of the soldiers who made it onto the beach that day wound up sacrificing their lives but in the X-Men Cinematic Universe, Wolverine and Sabretooth turned the tide for the Americans, putting a stop to the slaughter more prematurely than how it happened in history.

X-Men: First Class

While it was brief and subtle, Wolverine made a small cameo in X-Men: First Class. The scene revolved around the young Charles Xavier and Magneto recruiting mutants for their team. They attempted to recruit Wolverine but he pleasantly rejected their offer by telling them to f**k off. No one can blame Wolverine either, he was busy having a drink and a cigar, they should've left him alone.

No Smoking In X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014) Or The Wolverine (2013)

After X-Men: First Class, Wolverine no longer sports his signature cigars, neither X-Men: Days Of Future Past or The Wolverine snapped a shot of Wolverine puffing on a cigar. Wolverine didn't even get an opportunity to smoke one in X-Men: Apocalypse either since he was feral for the most part but it probably wouldn't have happened anyway. In terms of why this change occurred had to do with the negative attention received for Wolverine's heavy smoking in X-Men movies.

Back in 2009, 20th Century Fox received a lot of negative attention for featuring Hugh Jackman's character, the Wolverine, so heavily in movies. It wasn't Jackman attracting bad attention, it was the example that his character was setting by smoking cigars.

ackman's personification of Wolverine smoking was making quite a few parents and organizations fearful of what kind of influence smoking would have on young children. So, being the organization that it is, 20th Century Fox has since toned down the smoking in X-Men movies and practically removed the act altogether. However, Fox wouldn't allow Hugh Jackman to make his final appearance as the Wolverine without at least dropping a subtle nod to Wolverine's appeal for cheap cigars in Logan.

It is unfortunate that Jackman didn't get to smoke a cigar in what is presumed to be his last outing as the Wolverine but at least James Mangold intended to address the matter by having Jackman pick up some cigars in that convenience store scene of Logan.
